Local police in Jamalpur have recovered the lifeless body of thirty-two-year-old Israt Jahan from a rented fifth-floor apartment in the Sheker Vita area. Her two young children—a seven-year-old daughter and a five-year-old son—were discovered locked inside a separate room of the same flat during a midday operation on Sunday.
Preliminary assessments by law enforcement suggest that Israt may have been strangled to death. However, the exact motive behind the killing and the identity of the perpetrators remain unconfirmed. A young man who had been living with her in the apartment has been missing since the incident came to light.
Israt was the daughter of Md Ibrahim from Sarkaradi village in Sherpur’s Sreebordi upazila. Her late husband, Md Shawon, hailed from Ghatiadanga village in the same district and passed away roughly a year ago. Following her husband’s death, Israt had been raising her children on her own, eventually moving into the six-storey residential building in Jamalpur about a month prior to the tragedy.
According to neighbours and police records, Israt shared the flat with a man named Md Kausar Ahmed. When leasing the property, Kausar introduced himself to the landlord as Israt’s husband and claimed to be a businessman. Authorities are currently trying to verify Kausar’s background, his precise relationship with the victim, and the exact circumstances of their cohabitation.
The grim situation came to light on Sunday morning under distressing circumstances. Residents noticed the children peering through an apartment window and pleading with passers-by for water. Growing suspicious, neighbours approached the flat and found a padlock hanging on the outer door. They promptly dialled the national emergency hotline to alert the authorities.
Responding to the call, police and fire service personnel rushed to the scene. They broke open the door to enter the premises, discovering Israt’s body lying on a bed in one room while the two children remained trapped and frightened in the adjacent room. Rescuers safely brought the children out and secured the area.
The victim’s body was subsequently dispatched to the Jamalpur General Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. Investigators anticipate that the autopsy report will shed definitive light on the exact cause and time of death.
Nazmus Sakib, the officer-in-charge of Jamalpur Sadar Police Station, confirmed that preliminary findings point towards strangulation. Investigators are actively pursuing multiple leads to determine the timeline of the crime, uncover the underlying motive, and track down the fugitive, Kausar Ahmed.
Family members of the deceased have since arrived at the police station to assist with inquiries. The shocking discovery has sent ripples of anxiety through the local community, where residents are still coming to terms with the ordeal that began with children crying out for water from a locked window. Legal proceedings are currently underway as the investigation deepens.
