Police officers in Sreemangal, situated in the northeastern district of Moulvibazar, have taken a residential madrasa instructor into custody on charges of subjecting a nine-year-old pupil to sustained physical violence and emotional cruelty. The suspect, identified as Rakibul Hasan Miraj, was arrested on Sunday afternoon during a targeted police intervention at the Jamia Islamia Boys and Girls Madrasa along Sindurkhan Road.
Miraj, a resident of Sungair village within Sreemangal upazila, had been working as a resident religious tutor at the institution, where residential students remain under the direct supervision and care of teaching staff. Investigators noted that the alleged mistreatment had been occurring over a four-week period, with the young boy subjected to recurrent beatings and harsh punitive measures inside the residential quarters. The sustained nature of the abuse severely affected the child’s wellbeing, leaving him visibly traumatised, withdrawn, and nursing visible bodily wounds.
Matters escalated sharply on Sunday morning when the boy reportedly declined to follow an irregular demand made by the teacher. Enraged by the child’s reluctance, Miraj launched a violent physical assault on the pupil, striking him repeatedly and causing considerable bruising. Once the child managed to convey the extent of the ordeal to his family later that day, his distressed parents intervened immediately and lodged a formal written complaint with the local police.
Following the receipt of the complaint, an operational team from Sreemangal Police Station moved in to secure the madrasa grounds and arrested Miraj on site. Officers arranged for the injured child to be admitted to a nearby healthcare facility, where medical professionals continue to treat his physical injuries while monitoring his psychological recovery.
Sreemangal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sarkar Abdullah Al Mamun stated that clinical assessments conducted on the child corroborated the presence of recent physical trauma consistent with severe beating. During preliminary questioning at the police station, the accused admitted to carrying out the assault on the student. Law enforcement authorities confirmed that a criminal case is being registered under relevant statutory provisions safeguarding minors, ensuring the suspect faces formal court proceedings without delay.
