A former municipal councillor and leader of the now-banned Bangladesh Jubo League was killed in an armed attack in Bhairab, Kishoreganj, after a group of unidentified assailants allegedly hacked him with sharp weapons.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Al Amin Saikat, 40. He was attacked at around midnight on Sunday in front of the Gopal Jiur Temple in the Tinpatti area of Bhairab town. He sustained serious injuries in the attack and was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Saikat was the son of the late Jasim Uddin of Bhairabpur village under Bhairab police station in Kishoreganj. He served as the general secretary of the Kishoreganj municipal unit of the Jubo League and had previously served as a councillor of Bhairab Municipality.
According to his brother-in-law, Mohammad Bakibillah, Saikat was standing near the Gopal Jiur Temple when four to five unidentified men suddenly attacked him. The assailants allegedly used sharp weapons to hack him repeatedly, leaving him critically injured before fleeing the scene.
Family members were informed of the incident by local residents and rushed to the area. Saikat was initially taken to a local hospital in Bhairab for treatment. As his condition deteriorated, his relatives arranged to transfer him to Dhaka for specialised medical care.
He was brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 3am. Doctors in the emergency department examined him and pronounced him dead on arrival.
Inspector Mohammad Faruk, in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost, confirmed the death, citing the attending doctors. He said the body had been placed in the hospital morgue and that the relevant police station had been informed.
Bhairab Police Station officer-in-charge Mohammad Mahbub Rahman also confirmed the incident. He said police were working to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.
The motive behind the killing was not immediately clear. Police have yet to disclose the identities of the attackers or establish whether the victim had any prior dispute with them. Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack and gather information that could help identify those involved.
The killing has drawn attention in Bhairab, particularly because Saikat had previously held an elected position in the municipality and was associated with the local Jubo League. However, no official statement has so far established a motive for the attack.
Police said efforts were under way to apprehend those responsible. Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
