Public skepticism surrounding the police investigation into the horrific quadruple murder of retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty and three members of his family in Rangpur has intensified following detailed revelations by Joseph Mahbub, a close friend of deceased victim Agami Chakraborty. Following a personal visit to the crime scene, Mahbub publicly dissected the official law enforcement account, raising critical technical and logical objections that cast serious doubt over whether the real culprits have been apprehended.
The primary controversy centres on the arrest of two local youths, Siddhartha and Mugdha, whom law enforcement presented as the sole perpetrators. According to the official police briefing, the pair allegedly murdered all four family members in a fit of rage after being confronted while smoking yaba—a synthetic methamphetamine derivative—on the rooftop of the residence. Mahbub fundamentally rejected this explanation, pointing out that neighbours have no knowledge of either young man suffering from drug addiction, nor do they possess any documented history of violent behaviour.
Analysing the physical logistics of the crime, Mahbub argued that if the suspects’ primary objective was merely finding a quiet spot to consume narcotics, the adjoining rooftop occupied by female tenants offered a far safer alternative. Tenants might complain, but they would be far less likely to intervene physically. He stressed that the police claim of discovering drug consumption paraphernalia inside the living quarters rather than on the roof suggests either a thwarted plot or a calm, deliberate stay after the killings, making the argument that drug-induced panic triggered the massacre remarkably fragile.
Operational anomalies in the police handling of the case have further eroded public trust. Mahbub highlighted that the clothing worn by the suspects inexplicably changed between their initial arrest and their official media presentation, shifting from t-shirts to short-sleeved button-down shirts without any formal explanation. He dismissed the police claim that the power line was severed to make the house appear empty, noting that intruders do not need to disable electrical supply to simulate an unoccupied home. Moreover, authorities claimed to confirm the suspects’ background as goldsmiths simply because they allegedly tested stolen jewellery with fire, while also asserting definitive identity verification prior to formal DNA results—an unprecedented haste that has alarmed legal observers.
The location and state of the four bodies offer additional reasons for disbelief. Neighboring residents regularly use the connected rooftop to dry laundry. Mahbub noted that if the killers were panicked enough to cut the power supply, fear would have deterred them from leaving bodies exposed on the stairwell and rooftop where passers-by could easily spot them. This calculated placement suggests the killers deliberately positioned the deceased to mislead detectives or display an intentional level of brutality. He also drew attention to the distressing, compromised state of dress in which the mother and daughter were discovered.
The seamless execution of the crime points toward trained contract killers rather than amateur intruders. Silently overpowering and asphyxiating four individuals sequentially in the dead of night without raising an alarm across a densely populated neighborhood demands deliberate coordination. While the police depict two panicking addicts who caused short circuits, ransacked rooms, ate food from the refrigerator, stole valuables, and washed their mobile phones in detergent, the method of death reflects a level of cold efficiency that contradicts such erratic behaviour.
Digital timeline evidence has raised further questions. A text message was dispatched from Agami Chakraborty’s mobile phone at 5:50 am on Friday, several hours after the estimated time of death. Mahbub suggested that the killers likely used the deceased victim’s fingerprint to unlock the device and send the message, deliberately staging false leads to derail the forensic timeline.
The massacre has devastated the victim’s social circle and the wider municipality, leaving an entire lineage wiped out in a single night. While the case has attracted widespread coverage across Bangladeshi and Indian media outlets, local residents express frustration at what they perceive as federal detachment from regional security. This discontent is compounded by local law enforcement’s habit of prioritising moral policing in public parks over serious crime prevention, alongside intrusive media coverage at the crime scene.
