Police have arrested two alleged activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League following a sudden torch procession in the Bashon Thana area of Gazipur Metropolitan City. The arrests were made during a targeted police operation on Tuesday afternoon, August 25, amid heightened security measures across industrial and metropolitan zones.
The arrested individuals have been identified as 20-year-old Hridoy Ahmed Rishad and 22-year-old Md Sifat Ahmed. Hridoy is the son of Abdus Samad, while Sifat is the son of Ramzan Ali. Both reside in the Itahata Ranjittek neighbourhood within the jurisdiction of Bashon Police Station.
According to law enforcement officials, a small group of activists gathered on Tuesday afternoon to stage an unrecognised torch procession in clear violation of government bans on the organisation’s activities. Acting on a tip-off regarding the clandestine gathering, a rapid-response team from Bashon Police Station rushed to the scene. While several participants managed to disperse and flee upon spotting the police, officers intercepted and detained Hridoy and Sifat on the spot.
In the wake of the incident, local authorities have intensified patrols and intelligence surveillance throughout the Bashon area to prevent any potential escalation or public disorder. Investigators are currently reviewing available evidence, including local footage, to track down other participants who fled the scene.
Harunur Rashid, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bashon Police Station, confirmed that a formal case has been filed against the accused under the prevailing legal framework. “We have initiated legal proceedings against those detained, and our operations to identify and apprehend the remaining culprits are ongoing,” he stated. Preparations are underway to present the suspects before a court of law as the judicial process moves forward.
Security analysts note that law enforcement agencies have maintained a stringent stance on unauthorised political assemblies and underground activities by banned entities across Gazipur in recent months, aiming to preserve public safety and industrial stability.
