A Series of Brutal Murders Across the Country

The collective shock of the gruesome murders in Rangpur’s Mashuapara—where a retired schoolteacher, Ganapati Chakraborty, alongside his wife, son, and daughter, were brutally slaughtered—still haunts the public consciousness. Yet, before society could even begin to process the horror of that tragedy, another unthinkable bloodbath unfolded in June. In a horrific rampage on 25 June in Raipur, Lakshmipur, a young man hacked a mother and her three teenage daughters to death in the dead of night. The victims of this devastating attack were identified as 40-year-old Shahinur Begum and her daughters: 21-year-old Saima Akter, 17-year-old Ikra, and 10-year-old Sipa. These calculated and merciless acts of violence have left communities reeling, raising urgent questions about the safety of domestic spaces.
Tragically, the horrors witnessed in Rangpur and Lakshmipur are not isolated anomalies. Criminologists and sociologists point to a deeply worrying trend of escalating domestic brutality and familial breakdown across the nation. Over a recent six-month window spanning from 24 February to 24 August, investigative tracking revealed a staggering 18 separate mass casualty incidents where multiple members of a single family were wiped out. These senseless tragedies have collectively claimed at least 47 innocent lives, including numerous women and young children. The scale of devastation varies from harrowing double homicides to entire households being eradicated in a single night, leaving communities traumatised and security forces grappling with a surge in intimate-partner and intra-family violence.
The psychological and social dimensions behind this wave of mass killings paint a grim picture of modern societal stress. Experts suggest that deep-seated financial distress, unresolved property disputes, severe mental health deterioration, and the breakdown of interpersonal communication are turning homes into ticking time bombs. When individuals snap under extreme pressure, the consequences frequently manifest as catastrophic violence directed at the most vulnerable targets within their immediate circle. Furthermore, the normalisation of rage and the erosion of community support structures mean that warning signs are routinely missed by neighbours and relatives until it is far too late.
Addressing this silent epidemic requires far more than standard law enforcement intervention. Legal authorities face immense pressure to fast-track investigations and ensure visible accountability to deter potential perpetrators, yet punitive measures alone cannot heal the fractures within society. Mental health infrastructure remains woefully inadequate, leaving distressed individuals without professional guidance before they reach a breaking point. Civil society advocates stress that rebuilding social safety nets, promoting conflict-resolution education, and destigmatising mental health care are essential steps to prevent domestic spaces from transforming into sites of unimaginable horror. Until systemic changes take root, the haunting ghosts of families destroyed from within will continue to cast a dark shadow over the nation.
