Police have arrested 11 people, including an alleged leading drug dealer wanted in four cases, during a special operation in Tongi West area of Gazipur Metropolitan City.
The main suspect, identified as 34-year-old Mizan, also known as ‘Kutta Mizan’, was arrested in the early hours of Friday. Police said he was wanted under an arrest warrant and had previously been accused in four separate cases.
Tongi West Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Arifur Rahman confirmed the arrests during a press briefing on Friday afternoon. Mizan is the son of Atab Uddin, also known as Janu Mia, of the Haji Mazar area.
According to police, the operation was conducted late on Thursday night as part of a special anti-drug drive. A team led by Sub-Inspector Shahidul Islam was carrying out ‘Special Operation-81’ when officers launched an operation at around 3.15am near the gate of Shahid Ahsan Ullah Master Stadium, close to the Bata Gate area of Tongi.
Mizan was detained during the operation. Police said officers recovered one kilogramme of heroin, 2,500 yaba tablets and a motorcycle allegedly used to transport the drugs from his possession.
The seized heroin was valued at around Tk10 million, according to the police. The quantity of both heroin and yaba recovered in the operation prompted the authorities to treat the arrest as a significant development in their ongoing efforts to curb the supply and transportation of illegal drugs in the area.
Police records cited during the briefing show that Mizan has previously been accused in four cases. Two of those cases relate to drugs, one was filed under the Speedy Trial Act, while another falls under a different category. Police also said he was wanted under an arrest warrant.
The operation did not end with Mizan’s arrest. Police detained another 10 people on allegations of involvement in drug-related activities. However, the police statement did not provide separate details about whether drugs were recovered from each of those individuals.
Tongi, a densely populated industrial area within Gazipur, has long been a key location for transport and commercial activity, making law enforcement operations against the movement of illicit substances a continuing concern for the authorities. Police regularly conduct raids and targeted operations in different parts of the metropolitan area as part of efforts to disrupt drug distribution networks.
Following the arrests, police said legal proceedings had been initiated against the 11 suspects. Cases were filed under the relevant laws, and the arrested individuals were subsequently sent to court.
The latest operation forms part of the police’s wider anti-drug enforcement activities in Tongi West. Authorities said legal action would continue against those found to be involved in the possession, transportation or distribution of illegal narcotics.
