Coke Studio Pakistan has unveiled an ambitious new initiative titled ‘Nu.Wave’, a dedicated sub-platform engineered to reshape the nation’s musical landscape by giving voice to independent youth talent and experimental soundscapes. Scheduled for an official rollout in September, Nu.Wave will debut with six collaborative singles bringing together seasoned mainstream stars and a new wave of underground bedroom producers.
Since its launch in 2008, Coke Studio Pakistan has expanded into a global cultural phenomenon. Across 15 seasons, the flagship platform has released nearly 350 tracks, projecting Pakistani heritage, classical folk, Sufi Qawwali, and contemporary fusion to audiences in over 180 countries. Traditional Coke Studio releases built their reputation on grand, studio-bound ensemble performances where master instrumentalists combined regional heritage music with modern pop, rock, and orchestral arrangements. Nu.Wave, however, marks a deliberate departure from this signature format.
The project champions the DIY bedroom-pop ethos and modern digital music production methods preferred by a new generation of independent creators. Rather than confining artists to complex studio setups or imposing rigid arrangements, Nu.Wave grants young musicians complete creative freedom to compose, arrange, and produce music on their own laptops using digital audio workstations. Acclaimed director Kamal Khan, who heads the project, emphasized that the initiative’s core objective is to preserve the unvarnished artistic expression of young musicians rather than imposing corporate or studio guidelines.
The initial roster balances household names with fresh, undiscovered talent. Mainstream hitmakers joining the platform include pop singer Asim Azhar, indie icon Hasan Raheem, Shae Gill—whose performance on the viral global hit Pasoori brought her international fame—and the popular hip-hop outfit Young Stunners. They work alongside an emerging cohort of independent artists featuring Aryan SDK, Afmusic, Ezz Chughtai, Maanu, Sabat Batin, and Zoha Waseem.
Selection for the inaugural season followed an extensive nationwide digital call, with thousands of young musicians submitting original demos and performance videos through an open submission portal. Talent scouts curated the top entries, leading to the creation of six collaborative tracks: Maheya, Dil, Rangeen, Qasam, Shabnam, and Ae Deewane Ae Dil.
By bridging the gap between mainstream stars and underground bedroom producers, Nu.Wave reflects the rapidly evolving listening habits of younger audiences across South Asia. The initiative provides indie artists with a powerful global distribution network while establishing a dedicated incubator for electronic pop, hip-hop, and alternative music alongside Pakistan’s rich tradition of live performance.
