A grim sequence of events unfolded across Gazipur district on Saturday, 29 August, as police officers recovered the bodies of four individuals, including a young child and a teenager, following a series of unconnected incidents spanning rural disputes, drownings, mystery deaths, and railway hazards.
The most violent occurrence took place in Kapasia sub-district, where an ongoing domestic disagreement over cutting grass for livestock escalated into homicide in the Pabur Dakshin Para locality. According to local law enforcement reports, Niloy Sarkar, a young man aged 18 and son of Monir Sarkar, became embroiled in a heated verbal altercation with his cousin, Russel, early on Saturday morning. The argument appeared to subside, but Russel subsequently waited in ambush near the Abdur Rashid Orphanage along a paved roadway. When Niloy was returning home from a nearby market at around 11:30 am, his cousin launched a sudden, unprovoked assault, delivering a heavy blow to Niloy’s head with a sharp weapon. Horrified bystanders immediately rushed the profusely bleeding victim to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in central Gazipur, but attending medical personnel declared him dead on arrival. Officer-in-Charge of Kapasia Police Station, Mohammad Nasir Ahmed, stated that multiple police units have been dispatched to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspect, whilst formal legal proceedings under relevant homicide laws are currently being processed.
Kapasia was also the setting for a heartbreaking outcome to a multi-day missing person investigation along the Brahmaputra River. Five-year-old Zahid Hasan, son of local resident Mizanur Rahman from Khirati village in Ghagtia Union, vanished on the afternoon of Thursday, 27 August. When an exhaustive search across surrounding hamlets by panicked relatives proved fruitless, the family registered an official general diary with the Kapasia Police Station. The search came to a devastating end at approximately 8:00 am on Saturday when riverfront residents spotted the child’s body floating near a ghat roughly 400 metres from his family home. Police officers arrived shortly after being alerted by villagers to retrieve the remains, which were later handed over to the grieving family following procedural checks.
Meanwhile, in the forestlands of Golachipa within Kaliakair sub-district, local residents alerted authorities at around noon after coming across the heavily decomposed body of an unidentified man hanging from a tree branch deep within the woods. A police detail was dispatched to secure the scene and retrieve the remains, which were subsequently sent to the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue for a comprehensive post-mortem examination. Forensic officers and investigators are currently evaluating whether the fatality was a case of suicide or the result of foul play, while efforts remain ongoing to establish the deceased man’s identity.
In a separate tragedy along the district’s heavily frequented rail corridors, a speech-impaired man was killed in a train collision. Farooq Ahmed, In-Charge of the Joydebpur Railway Police Outpost, confirmed that Abu Bakar, a mute young man, was struck and killed by a passing train near Mouchak Railway Station on the busy Joydebpur-Dhaka rail route at roughly 10:00 am. Because the victim lived in the immediate vicinity of the tracks, family members and neighbours quickly gathered at the location and recovered his body to begin local funeral arrangements.
