Police have arrested two leaders of college branches of the Chhatra League in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria following separate operations in the area on Saturday night (29 August).
The arrested individuals have been identified as Mohammad Saymun Chowdhury, 31, joint general secretary of the Chhatra League unit at T. Ali College in Kasba, and Mohammad Azmir Haque, 32, president of the organisation’s Char Gachh N.I. Bhuiyan Degree College unit.
Saymun is the son of the late Abdul Quddus of Shahpur village in Kasba, while Azmir is the son of Anwar Hossain of Char Gachh village in the same upazila.
According to police sources, officers first conducted an operation in the T. Ali College intersection area at around 7.30pm on Saturday after receiving confidential information. Azmir Haque was arrested during the operation.
Police subsequently carried out another operation in the Kasba New Market area at approximately 8.35pm, where Saymun Chowdhury was taken into custody.
The arrests were confirmed in a media statement issued by the Brahmanbaria district police late on Saturday night. The statement said the two men had been detained during separate operations carried out in Kasba.
The officer-in-charge of Kasba Police Station said the process of taking necessary legal action against the arrested individuals was under way. However, the police statement did not provide details of any specific case or allegation in connection with their arrests.
As a result, the precise circumstances leading to the arrests could not immediately be established from the information released by the police. Further details may emerge as the legal proceedings progress.
The arrests come against a wider backdrop of police operations involving political and organisational figures across Bangladesh.
