An ambulance driver has been detained in Narail’s Lohagara after the family of a deceased housewife accused him of attempting an inappropriate act involving her body inside an ambulance.
The accused has been identified as Sagar Sheikh, son of the late Kamrul Sheikh of the Lakshmipasha petrol pump area in Lohagara. Police detained him at around 7.30pm on Sunday (30 August) in front of Lohagara Upazila Health Complex.
According to local residents and police sources, 22-year-old Sadia Akter Lamia, a housewife from Chhagolchhira village under Lohagara Union, died by suicide on Saturday morning after allegedly hanging herself with a scarf. Police subsequently recovered her body from the scene.
As part of the legal procedure following the death, the body was placed inside an ambulance to be taken to the police station later that night.
The family alleged that Sagar Sheikh was alone inside the ambulance with Sadia’s body during the late hours of the night. They claimed he attempted to engage in an inappropriate act with the body while inside the vehicle.
Sadia’s mother reportedly became aware of what was happening and went to the ambulance, where she allegedly caught the driver in the act. She claimed that the driver had moved her daughter’s clothing while attempting the alleged act.
The family also alleged that the ambulance windows had been covered with towels so that people outside could not see what was happening inside the vehicle.
After the incident came to light, local people reportedly gathered at the scene. They detained Sagar Sheikh and assaulted him before informing the police. Officers later took him into custody and brought him to the police station.
The allegations have caused considerable discussion in the area, particularly because the incident reportedly occurred while the deceased woman’s body was awaiting transfer for the necessary legal procedures.
However, the allegations have yet to be established through investigation. Police will determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and take further action according to the findings.
Inspector (Investigation) Ajit Kumar Roy of Lohagara Police Station confirmed on Monday (31 August) that Sagar Sheikh had been detained.
“The accused Sagar Sheikh has been detained. Legal action will be taken against him,” he said.
Police said the matter is being dealt with through the appropriate legal process.
