A routine afternoon swim turned into an unimaginable tragedy in northern Bangladesh when a recent school graduate lost his life in the Punarbhaba River.
Rifat, a teenager who had just passed his Secondary School Certificate examinations from Baniakhari High School in the Chirirbandar Upazila, drowned during a weekend outing. He was the son of Rafiqul Islam, a local market proprietor residing in the Nimnagar Phulbari Bus Stand area of Dinajpur Sadar. Relatives and neighbours noted that beyond his academic achievements, the young student was known for his cheerful disposition and fondness for spending time with his peers.
The incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon when Rifat and two of his friends headed to the Mahutpara area to cool off in the river. Around half-past three, what was meant to be a simple leisure activity quickly escalated into an emergency as both Rifat and a companion, Insan, began slipping beneath the surface of the water.
Alerted by the unfolding disaster, a third friend waiting on the bank raised the alarm, prompting locals to rush to the rescue. Quick-thinking residents managed to pull Insan out of the water. He was rushed to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital in a critical condition, where medical personnel treated him and later confirmed he was out of danger.
However, Rifat vanished beneath the turbid water before bystanders could reach him. Panicked locals immediately searched the area and notified the local fire service when initial efforts failed.
As darkness approached, specialized divers were dispatched from the regional headquarters in Rangpur to scour the riverbed. Search operations continued into Sunday evening before being suspended overnight due to poor visibility. Rescue workers resumed their sweep at first light on Monday. Within hours, local authorities confirmed that Rifat’s body had surfaced near the spot where he was last seen, some sixteen hours after he first went missing.
Upon hearing the news, grieving relatives rushed to the riverbank, where the heart-wrenching wails of family members created a solemn atmosphere. Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Nurunnabi of Dinajpur Kotwali Police Station stated that the recovery was successfully concluded by the fire service diving unit. Following the completion of necessary administrative formalities, police handed the body over to the family for final funeral rites.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the local community and reignited concerns regarding safety in open waterways. During the monsoon season, the Punarbhaba River experiences increased depth and stronger undercurrents, transforming seemingly familiar spots into hazardous environments for swimmers. Local administrators and community elders continue to urge parents to counsel young people against entering turbulent rivers without adequate supervision or safety precautions, a recurring danger that claims young lives across the region each year.
