A 45-year-old man died after being electrocuted while allegedly attempting to steal a tube-well pump motor in Loknathpur village of Damurhuda upazila in Chuadanga early on Tuesday (1 September).
The deceased was identified as Buro Mia, a resident of Mobarakpara in Darshana municipality. He was the son of Budo Mia.
According to police and local residents, Buro Mia went to the house of Keramat Mondal in Loknathpur at around 3am. He allegedly attempted to remove the motor attached to a tube-well on the premises. The electricity supply to the motor was reportedly still switched on at the time.
While trying to detach the motor, he came into contact with the live electrical connection and suffered a severe electric shock. Police said he died at the scene.
Local residents later became aware of the incident and informed the police. A patrol team from Damurhuda Model Police Station subsequently reached the house and recovered the body.
Mezbah Uddin, officer-in-charge of Damurhuda Model Police Station, said a patrol team had been sent to the location after receiving information about the incident. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the death and other aspects of the incident.
The initial information indicates that the man was electrocuted while attempting to remove the tube-well motor. However, police said the exact circumstances would be established through an investigation before further legal action is taken.
The incident occurred during the early hours of the morning, when the village was largely quiet. News of the death soon spread through Loknathpur, prompting discussion among local residents.
The incident also highlights the danger posed by live electrical connections around agricultural and household water pumps. Attempting to handle an electrically connected motor without first disconnecting the power supply can result in a potentially fatal electric shock.
Police are continuing to examine the circumstances of the incident. Necessary procedures concerning the recovered body are also being carried out, while further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
