Two people, a woman and her son-in-law, have been arrested in Lohagara upazila of Narail after the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) allegedly recovered one kilogramme of cannabis and 101 yaba tablets from a house in the area.
The arrests were made on Monday afternoon, 31 August, during a raid at a house in Panchuria village. The two suspects were identified as Seema Begum, 38, wife of Yusuf Sheikh of Panchuria village, and her son-in-law, Russell Sheikh, 21, son of Abul Kalam Azad of Noapara village in the same upazila.
According to the DNC, the operation was conducted following information received through a confidential source. A team from the Narail office of the narcotics control authorities went to Yusuf Sheikh’s house in Panchuria and searched the residence.
During the search, officials recovered one kilogramme of cannabis and 101 yaba tablets, after which Seema Begum and Russell Sheikh were taken into custody.
Golok Majumder, deputy director of the Department of Narcotics Control in Narail, confirmed the arrests and the recovery. He said a case had been filed against the two suspects under the Narcotics Control Act at Lohagara Police Station.
The authorities said Seema’s husband, Yusuf Sheikh, is currently in jail in connection with a narcotics case. According to Golok Majumder, Yusuf has been identified by the DNC as one of the prominent drug dealers in Lohagara.
The DNC official alleged that Seema and Russell had been involved in drug dealing together while Yusuf was in custody. He further claimed that the pair had been involved in the illegal trade for around six years.
Following their arrest, the two suspects were produced before a court on Tuesday and were subsequently sent to jail. The case will now proceed through the legal process.
The seizure comes as law enforcement agencies continue efforts to curb the distribution of narcotics in different parts of Bangladesh. Cannabis and yaba remain among the drugs frequently targeted in such operations, with authorities conducting raids based on intelligence and information about suspected storage and distribution networks.
Golok Majumder said the DNC’s anti-narcotics operations would continue. The department, he added, would maintain its efforts against those involved in the possession, supply and distribution of illegal drugs.
The authorities have not provided further details about the alleged source of the seized narcotics or whether other people are being investigated in connection with the case. Those matters are expected to form part of the ongoing legal proceedings.
