A mobile court in Mirzapur, Tangail, sentenced three young men to various prison terms on Thursday afternoon following offences involving domestic abuse and illicit drug consumption. Executive Magistrate and Mirzapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Johirul Alam passed the administrative judicial orders at his official complex.
The individuals convicted include Sagar Mia, an auto-rickshaw driver and resident of Rakerteki village in Gorai Union. Sagar received a six-month custodial sentence for repeatedly assaulting his mother. According to police, the accused was a habitual substance user who regularly subjected his mother to severe physical abuse amidst family disputes. Exhausted by the continuous mistreatment, his mother lodged a formal written complaint with Mirzapur Police Station seeking legal protection.
Acting on her complaint, police officers conducted an operation on Thursday morning, detaining Sagar at his residence. During concurrent anti-narcotics sweeps in nearby areas, officers also apprehended two other men—Mostakin Ahmed of Gandhabyapara and Bazlur Rahman of Uttar Gandhabyapara—while they were actively consuming drugs.
All three detainees were subsequently presented before Executive Magistrate Johirul Alam at the Upazila Nirbahi Officer’s premises. Upon evaluating the police findings and hearing the specifics of each case, Magistrate Alam handed down a six-month prison term to Sagar Mia for maternal assault and domestic violence. Meanwhile, Mostakin Ahmed and Bazlur Rahman were sentenced to seven days of imprisonment each for public drug use.
Sub-Inspector Sohel from the Deohata Police Outpost confirmed the immediate execution of the judicial orders, stating that law enforcement escorted all three individuals directly to the Tangail District Gaol on Thursday afternoon to serve their terms.
The rapid judicial outcome demonstrates the function of Bangladesh’s mobile court system, which empowers executive officers to conduct swift summary trials for public nuisances and social infractions under the Mobile Court Act. Community leaders in Tangail have repeatedly raised concerns regarding substance dependency among young adults in rural unions, noting its direct link to increased domestic abuse against vulnerable, elderly family members. Local residents welcomed the prompt administrative intervention, voicing hope that the convictions will serve as a visible deterrent against narcotics abuse and family violence across the Gorai region.
