Bangladesh fast bowler Hasan Mahmood made an impressive return to the County Championship, claiming seven wickets across two innings as Kent secured an 84-run victory over Worcestershire in Canterbury. His match-winning contribution earned him the Player of the Match award and strengthened Kent’s position in Division Two.
Kent completed the victory during the third session of the fourth and final day on Saturday, 5 September. Chasing a challenging target of 390, Worcestershire were bowled out for 295 in their second innings. Hasan finished with three wickets for 51 runs in that innings, having earlier taken four for 68 in the first.
His overall figures of seven wickets for 119 runs proved decisive in a match in which Worcestershire mounted a determined chase before losing their final five wickets for just 30 runs.
Hasan’s performance was particularly significant given his recent form for Kent. The 26-year-old paceman had taken 12 wickets in his previous two matches for the county, prompting Kent to bring him back into the side. He immediately repaid that confidence with another influential display.
After three matches for Kent this season, Hasan has now taken 19 wickets at an impressive average of 18.31. His ability to strike at important moments has made him a valuable part of the county’s bowling attack as the Division Two campaign reaches its closing stages.
On the final day, Hasan produced several crucial breakthroughs when Worcestershire still had a realistic chance of chasing down the target. He first trapped Adam Hose leg before wicket to end a 76-run partnership. He then bowled Henry Cullen, breaking another partnership worth 86 runs.
With Worcestershire at 265 for five, Hasan struck again, dismissing Ben Allison leg before wicket. That wicket further exposed the lower order and helped Kent turn a competitive contest firmly in their favour.
Worcestershire captain Brett D’Oliveira provided stubborn resistance and remained unbeaten on 103. He faced 221 deliveries and struck 12 fours during his century. Despite his determined effort, he was unable to prevent Worcestershire from collapsing towards the end of the innings.
Kent’s other bowlers also played their part. South African paceman Keith Dudgeon claimed three wickets for 63 runs, while England seamer Matt Milnes took three for 51. Milnes also claimed the final Worcestershire wicket to seal the victory. New Zealand fast bowler Matt Quinn completed the attack with the remaining wicket.
For Kent, the result was their sixth win of the season and an important boost in their pursuit of promotion to Division One. They have moved into second place in Division Two with 170 points from 11 matches.
Durham remain at the top of the table with 210 points from the same number of matches. With only three rounds remaining in the competition, the gap leaves Kent with little room for error in the promotion race.
Hasan’s return therefore comes at a crucial stage of the season. His recent run of 19 wickets in three matches has given Kent a reliable source of breakthroughs, particularly when opponents appear capable of building substantial partnerships. If he can maintain that level of consistency over the remaining rounds, his form could prove significant in Kent’s attempt to secure promotion.
