Afghan pop superstar and human rights activist Aryana Sayeed has launched an exclusive, women-only European concert tour, utilizing her music as an unyielding instrument of political protest against the Taliban’s oppressive regime. Titled ‘Ladies Only’, the musical journey aims to unite the dispersed Afghan diaspora while demanding international accountability for the systematic erasure of women’s rights in her homeland.
In a recent interview with the pan-European broadcasting network Euronews, Sayeed explained that the concept behind the tour had been developing for nearly four years. The catalyst was the Taliban’s rapid resurgence in August 2021, an event that abruptly halted decades of fragile progress for women across the nation.
Since regaining control, the fundamentalist authorities have systematically dismantled female autonomy. Secondary schools and universities remain barred to female students, while women have been systematically pushed out of public administration, private commerce, and civil society. Public spaces—including parks, fitness centres, and public baths—are entirely off-limits, leaving millions effectively trapped in their homes.
Through her performances, Sayeed seeks to confront this grim reality head-on. Restricting her concert audiences strictly to women creates a safe, liberating environment where exile community members can gather, build solidarity, and express themselves free from fear or religious surveillance.
Often designated ‘The Voice of Afghanistan’, Sayeed was previously a household name as a prime-time judge on the hit national television franchise The Voice Afghanistan. Forced to flee the country during the turbulent 2021 military evacuation, she continues her resistance from abroad through social media channels and her dedicated human rights organization, DEFAW (Defenders of Equality, Freedom and Advancement for Women).
The ‘Ladies Only’ tour officially commenced on Friday, 4th September, at the historic Laurenskerk in Rotterdam, Netherlands, followed by a performance in Stockholm, Sweden, on 5th September. The tour will subsequently visit Hamburg, Germany, on 26th September, before concluding in Wiesbaden, near Frankfurt, on 3rd October.
By transforming European concert venues into spaces of defiant solidarity, Sayeed is offering a beacon of hope to those enduring what she describes as Afghanistan’s darkest era, ensuring the plight of her country’s women is neither forgotten nor silenced.
