Police in Sylhet have detained three men following widespread outrage over a video showing a 16-year-old girl bound with a iron chain around her waist, dragged along a public street, and subjected to physical assault over an alleged shoplifting attempt.
The incident occurred late on Monday night in the D-Block Mosque Market area of the Shahjalal Uposhohor neighbourhood. Local traders and residents apprehended the teenager, accusing her of attempting to steal from a shop. Instead of immediately contacting law enforcement, several individuals encircled the minor, tied a chain around her waist, and dragged her through the street while subjecting her to assault and verbal abuse.
Later that night, the girl was handed over to the local police station. However, those who detained her failed to lodge a formal written complaint regarding the alleged attempt at theft, leaving the veracity of the original accusations unverified by legal authorities.
The situation escalated dramatically on Tuesday when recorded video footage of the incident surfaced on social media platforms. The clip, showing the public humiliation and physical mistreatment of a minor, triggered severe criticism online and across the local community. The viral video prompted fundamental legal questions regarding mob justice, extrajudicial punishment, and the severe breach of child protection standards.
Following the public outcry, Shahpraan Police Station launched an investigation, using the video footage to identify the primary perpetrators visible in the crowd. Police units conducted coordinated raids across the area late on Tuesday night, arresting three individuals.
The detained men have been identified as Md Jakir Hossain, 43, his brother Md Mozakkir Hossain, 40, and Md Burhan Uddin, 45, all residents of the Shahjalal Uposhohor district.
Confirming the arrests, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, Md Monjurul Alam, stated that formal charges are currently being prepared against the suspects. The police confirmed that the detained men will be presented before the court shortly as investigations continue into the unlawful detention, assault, and public torture of the teenager.
This case highlights growing concerns amongst human rights advocates and legal experts regarding instances where local crowds take the law into their own hands rather than handing suspects directly over to statutory law enforcement authorities. The physical abuse and public degradation of a minor make the offense particularly grave under Bangladeshi law, which strictly prohibits the torture and unlawful detention of children under any circumstances. Police officials assured that a full investigation is underway to determine the extent of involvement of all individuals captured in the footage.
