A joint operation by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Sarail, Brahmanbaria, has led to the seizure of more than 10 tonnes of Indian cumin and the detention of three people.
The operation was conducted at around 9.30am on Thursday (10 September) in the Shahbazpur area of Sarail by members of BGB’s 25 Battalion and RAB. The seizure was subsequently disclosed in a press release issued by the BGB later in the day.
The three detainees were identified as Faisal Abir, Azizul Hakim and Habibur Rahman. Their home districts are Sylhet and Rajshahi.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Jabbar Ahmed, commander of BGB 25 Battalion, the joint team stopped and searched a lorry travelling from Sylhet towards Dhaka. During the search, officers found 10,020kg of cumin, which was identified as Indian produce.
The people travelling in the lorry were asked to produce valid documents establishing the lawful possession and transportation of the cumin. However, they were unable to provide the required paperwork, prompting the authorities to seize the consignment and detain the three people on board.
The quantity seized amounted to more than 10 tonnes, making it a substantial consignment. Authorities are now expected to examine the relevant documentation and circumstances surrounding its transportation as part of the legal process.
The incident also highlights the importance of documentation in the movement of imported goods. Commercial consignments transported within Bangladesh are generally subject to checks concerning their origin, ownership and supporting paperwork. When authorities find that the required documents cannot be produced, goods may be detained or seized for further examination.
In this case, the lorry was travelling towards Dhaka after originating in Sylhet when it was intercepted in Shahbazpur. The BGB said the cumin was seized after those in the vehicle failed to provide valid documents when asked to do so.
The three detainees will remain subject to the applicable legal procedures, while the seized cumin and the lorry are expected to be dealt with in accordance with the relevant authorities’ process. No further details about possible charges or subsequent legal action were immediately provided.
The operation was carried out jointly by the BGB and RAB, with the seizure taking place during a roadside search of the Dhaka-bound lorry. Further examination of the consignment and the circumstances surrounding its transport may clarify the nature of the alleged irregularity.
