Fresh discussions have emerged surrounding the resignation of Saima Wazed Putul, daughter of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Regional Director for South-East Asia at the World Health Organization (WHO), following the specific allegations raised against her. Among the claims, an allegation regarding financial irregularity concerning an official trip to China involved just USD 901—equivalent to approximately 1,11,000 Bangladeshi Taka at current exchange rates.

Wazed has consistently denied all wrongdoing. According to a letter sent by her legal team on 3 July 2026, the financial matter related to the China visit was not a case of personal financial fraud. Instead, it stemmed from an administrative oversight by an assistant during the routine process of processing travel expense reimbursements.

Following the allegations, Wazed formally requested the WHO through her legal representatives to conduct a thorough and proper investigation. Her stance was clear: the claims should be independently verified and all relevant evidence systematically reviewed.

However, according to her statements, she was kept away from fulfilling her official duties for an extended period. Despite expecting an independent and transparent investigation into the matter, she reportedly saw no satisfactory progress or procedural fairness.

On Wednesday, she submitted her formal resignation to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. In her resignation letter, she stated that being prevented from carrying out her responsibilities had eroded her faith and confidence in the WHO leadership. She also noted that remaining on unpaid leave for nearly a year had severely strained her personal financial situation.

Another widely discussed allegation against Wazed involves the ‘misrepresentation of academic credentials’.

Regarding this issue, published reports indicate that the WHO allegations did not directly accuse her of possessing a fake or forged degree from any specific university. Instead, the contention centred on how her educational qualifications were presented. According to Wazed, the WHO Director-General had been previously informed about an honorary doctorate she received in recognition of her extensive work on autism in Bangladesh.

This context aligns with her long-standing professional background. On its official portal, the WHO has recognised her as an expert working in the fields of mental health and autism. Prior to assuming her regional role at the WHO, she served as a mental health and autism adviser to the Director-General and was a member of the WHO’s Mental Health Expert Advisory Panel.

In her resignation letter, Wazed also addressed claims raised by the WHO regarding her acquisition of land in Bangladesh.

She clarified that the property in question was acquired well before she joined the WHO and that her entitlement to the asset was governed by specific Bangladeshi laws. Consequently, her legal team asserted that linking her prior land ownership to her tenure at the WHO was entirely baseless.

Saima Wazed assumed office as the WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia in February 2024. Elected for a five-year term, the role represents one of the world’s most influential positions in global health policy.

However, she was placed on leave in July 2025 and subsequently received no remuneration for nearly a year, as detailed in her resignation letter. Her representatives stated that she repeatedly contacted WHO management seeking an independent inquiry into the claims before ultimately deciding to step down.

Wazed’s resignation has drawn contrasting reactions across political and social media spheres. Critics aligned with political opponents of the Awami League view her departure as a direct consequence of the allegations leveled against her. Conversely, supporters and Awami League sympathisers argue that by stepping down after demanding an independent investigation without receiving a fair trial, Wazed preserved her personal dignity and professional standing.

Political opinions aside, the USD 901 travel expense claim does not in itself establish that Saima Wazed engaged in personal embezzlement or fraud. As stated by her legal counsel, the matter originated from an administrative error by a staff member, and Wazed herself actively sought a formal investigation. Without a conclusive investigative finding, treating these claims as proven corruption remains unsubstantiated, just as dismissing them solely on account of political identity would be equally unreasonable.
