Salahuddin Sagar prefers to remain away from the glare of publicity. For him, weaving words into songs carries far greater meaning than appearing in news headlines. Media attention and the attraction of the limelight have never been his priority. Yet, he has emerged as one of Bangladesh’s busiest and most popular lyricists, with a string of widely recognised songs to his name, including Jodi Monta Churi Kori, Kalachan, Dui Chakkar Saikel and Shikari.
Songs written by Sagar are regularly heard in the voices of some of the country’s leading singers. Despite that growing recognition, he continues to see himself as a quiet worker of words rather than a public figure. His approach to music is marked by a striking sense of humility. In his own assessment, he is merely a drop in the vast ocean of Bangla music.
Born on 11 July 1987 in Muradnagar, Cumilla, Sagar is the eldest of three brothers. His connection with writing began during his school years. He started writing rhymes and poems while studying in Class Six, and his classmates and teachers came to know him primarily as a poet.
His early interest in songwriting also developed through friendship. There was a period when he wrote songs and his friend Belal Hossain would sing them. After a long break, Sagar returned to songwriting professionally when one of his compositions was released in 2018. By 2019, he had begun to establish himself in Bangladesh’s music industry as a lyricist.
Over roughly eight years in the profession, he says he has written around 400 songs. His work has covered several styles, including modern Bangla music, folk and melody-based compositions. Rather than confining himself to a single musical form, he has continued to write across genres, allowing different emotions and themes to shape his lyrics.
Music, however, is not his only professional commitment. Sagar works for a private organisation in the port city of Chattogram. Balancing a full-time job with songwriting requires considerable discipline, particularly when creative ideas emerge outside working hours. Whenever he gets time away from his professional responsibilities, he returns to his notebook and pen.
Sometimes the writing continues late into the night. That dedication has occasionally come at the expense of family time, something Sagar openly acknowledges. He says his commitment to songwriting has sometimes led to minor disagreements with his wife because he could not give his family enough time. The situation changes, however, when a song becomes a major hit and the success brings happiness to the family as well.
Despite becoming a sought-after lyricist, Sagar has deliberately kept himself away from the media spotlight. He does not appear interested in building a public persona around his success. Instead, he wants listeners to remember him through his work.
For Sagar, lasting recognition should come from the quality of a creation rather than publicity surrounding its creator. He believes that if the work is genuinely good, people will remember it without being constantly reminded of who wrote it.
That philosophy perhaps explains the contrast between his growing presence in Bangladesh’s music scene and his relatively quiet personal profile. While his words continue to reach large audiences through popular songs, Sagar remains comfortable behind the scenes, allowing the music to speak for itself.
His ambition is simple: to keep creating and to leave behind work that people can remember. And despite the number of songs he has already written and the popularity many of them have achieved, he remains modest about his contribution. In the vast world of Bangla music, he sees himself not as a towering figure, but simply as one small drop in an ocean.
