Two hand bombs stored inside an abandoned house exploded in Bhadrakhola village under Ghatmajhi Union in Madaripur Sadar upazila on Sunday night (13 September), causing panic among residents in the surrounding area.
The explosion took place at the abandoned house of local resident Alamgir Laptin. The property was reportedly no longer in regular use. According to information available so far, two hand bombs had been kept inside the old structure before they suddenly exploded at night.
The loud blasts startled people living nearby. Hearing the sound, local residents came out of their homes and went towards the abandoned house to find out what had happened. The incident created concern in the area, particularly because the explosive devices had apparently been stored inside a property close to a residential locality.
Police were informed after the incident and officers visited the scene. No one was injured or killed in the explosions, according to the police. However, questions remain over how the explosives came to be inside the abandoned house and who had placed them there.
Alamgir Laptin said he and his family had no knowledge that hand bombs had been kept inside the unused house.
“We do not know who left the hand bombs inside my abandoned house,” he said. “We came out of our new house after hearing the sound of the explosion. Later, we noticed the smell left by the exploded hand bombs.”
The incident has raised concerns among local residents about the presence of explosive devices in an unused structure. As the house was not being regularly occupied, the bombs had apparently remained unnoticed until the explosion occurred.
Madaripur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Kalam Azad said two hand bombs had exploded inside an old or abandoned house belonging to Alamgir Laptin. He confirmed that there were no casualties in the incident.
The officer said an investigation was under way to determine the circumstances surrounding the explosion. Police are also looking into how the hand bombs reached the abandoned property and who may have been responsible for keeping them there.
At this stage, the identity of the person or persons who stored the explosives remains unknown. Police have not reported any arrests in connection with the incident.
Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the storage and subsequent explosion of the devices as part of their efforts to establish the cause of the incident. The authorities will also seek to determine whether the explosives were deliberately kept at the location or had been left there for some other reason.
For residents of Bhadrakhola, the sudden blast has brought renewed concern over safety in the locality.
