According to local witnesses and eyewitness accounts, the accident took place as the Dhaka-bound “Dashmina Express” bus—originating from Dashmina upazila in Patuakhali—approached the Chhoymail locality. A pedestrian suddenly attempted to cross the busy highway, prompting the driver to slam on the emergency brakes to avoid a direct collision. Caught off guard by the sudden movement, the driver lost control of the heavy vehicle, causing it to swerve off the tarmac and plunge sideways into the adjacent deep pond, where it settled partially submerged.

The suddenness of the crash created immense panic among the passengers trapped inside the sinking vehicle. Hearing their cries, courageous residents living near the highway rushed to the scene without delay. Simultaneously, local fire service and civil defence units were dispatched to handle the emergency. Joint efforts by the local community and professional rescue workers ensured that all trapped individuals were successfully extricated from the wreckage, preventing what could easily have been a far graver tragedy.

Among the fifteen injured passengers, those who suffered severe fractures or deep lacerations were promptly transported to nearby hospitals for specialised medical care. Several others with minor bruises and cuts received immediate first aid treatment at local clinics before being released.

Confirming the details of the accident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shakhawat Hossain of the Airport police station stated that law enforcement units arrived swiftly to manage traffic flow and oversee the rescue operations. He added that no fatalities have been reported thus far. Authorities are currently coordinating efforts to lift the mangled bus out of the pond, while standard legal procedures regarding the highway accident are actively underway.
