A evening journey to a local event turned tragic in Koyra upazila after a pedestrian died following a collision with a motorcycle. The incident, which also left three young men riding the two-wheeler injured, occurred at approximately 8:00 pm on Wednesday at the Islampur Chowrasta intersection under Bagali Union.
The victim was identified as 45-year-old Rafiqul Islam, a resident of the Gopirayer Ber area adjacent to Islampur Chowrasta. He was the son of the late Jamil Uddin Sana.
According to local eyewitnesses, the three motorcyclists were travelling from the Baka area in neighbouring Paikgachha upazila. They were heading towards a tree fair hosted at Kachharibari in Uttor Bedkashi Union under Koyra. As the motorcycle navigated the Islampur Chowrasta junction, Rafiqul Islam stepped out to cross the road. The vehicle struck him directly, causing him to fall to the tarmac with severe physical injuries.
Bystanders rushed to assist, securing transport to convey the critically injured pedestrian to the Koyra Upazila Health Complex. Upon examination, the attending duty physician pronounced Rafiqul dead on arrival.
The three occupants of the motorcycle were thrown from the vehicle during the impact and sustained injuries of varying severity. Local residents rescued them from the road and admitted them to the same health facility, where they remain under medical care. The injured individuals have been identified as Md Rayhan Gazi, son of Billal Gazi from Raruli village; Antar Mondal, son of Sandip Mondal from Kathipara (Baka) village; and Md Hridoy Hossain, son of Aziz Sardar from the same locality. All three reside within Paikgachha upazila.
Unplanned road crossings, limited visibility during evening hours, and mixed traffic on narrow upazila roads remain major factors behind frequent road accidents across rural Bangladesh. The sudden fatality has brought a wave of grief to the Islampur Chowrasta community, where neighbours gathered following the crash.
Officers from the Koyra Police Station responded to the incident shortly after being alerted. Confirming the details, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Rashedul Alam stated that a police team inspected the crash site on Wednesday night. Officers recovered the body and dispatched it to the Khulna Medical College Hospital morgue for a mandatory post-mortem examination. Police are investigating the exact circumstances of the crash, including vehicle speed and road conditions, before initiating formal legal proceedings.
