A 25-year-old grocery trader was brutally hacked with cleavers in broad daylight before being robbed of his motorbike and cash in the capital’s Mohammadpur area on Thursday morning.
The victim, identified as Md Hriday Miah, was ambushed at around 7:45 am in the Sadeq Khan Road area while on his way to procure supplies for his business. Hriday, who resides in a rented home in Dhanmondi’s Shankar area, was heading towards the Krishi Market in Mohammadpur on his motorcycle when the gang struck.
According to his friend, Mohammad Biplob, at least five assailants intercepted Hriday’s vehicle on Sadeq Khan Road. Without warning, the attackers brandished sharp cleavers and launched a violent assault, hacking him severely across his back and waist.
As the young trader collapsed on the road bleeding, the muggers snatched his motorcycle and grabbed Tk 20,000 in cash from his possession before fleeing the scene. Local residents and acquaintances rushed to the spot shortly afterwards, rescuing Hriday and transporting him to the emergency unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for urgent treatment.
Inspector Md Habibur Rahman, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost, confirmed that the injured businessman received immediate medical attention at the hospital. Officers recorded his statement regarding the horrific morning ordeal.
The violent incident highlights a worrying trend of early-morning street crime and armed robberies in parts of the capital. Mohammadpur and its adjacent corridors have frequently made headlines for persistent security challenges, with armed gangs often targeting early commuters and traders carrying cash. Local law enforcement authorities face growing public pressure to crack down on street violence, curb blade-wielding gangs, and restore order.
While police have initiated inquiries to identify the perpetrators, no formal arrests have been announced yet, nor has the stolen motorcycle or cash been recovered. Investigations remain ongoing as authorities review the area for potential witnesses and surveillance footage.
