Ed Sheeran’s international Loop Tour faces unprecedented disruption after the supporting line-up staged a collective walkout in solidarity with American rapper Macklemore, who was dropped from the tour following a pro-Palestinian demonstration on stage.
The controversy erupted on 4 September during a performance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Taking the microphone, Macklemore declared his support for Gaza, shouting “Free Palestine” to the audience before delivering a rendition of “Hind’s Hall”—a protest track released in support of pro-Palestinian student demonstrations at Columbia University. The performance featured background visual projections depicting destruction across the Gaza Strip, drawing immediate backlash from several advocacy groups, including the Israeli-American Council and the watchdog organisation StopAntisemitism.
Following intense pressure, concert promoter Messina Touring Group officially removed Macklemore from the remaining tour dates. The decision was heavily influenced by Robert Kraft, billionaire owner of the New England Patriots and the Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts, who refused to allow the rapper to perform at his venue. Kraft defended the stance, arguing that stadium platforms should not host rhetoric that could be perceived as divisive or hurtful to the Jewish community.
In response to the cancellation, fellow touring artists swiftly withdrew their participation. Producer Finneas—brother and primary collaborator of Billie Eilish—announced his departure via Instagram, stating that artists should never be silenced for speaking out against human suffering. Danish group Lukas Graham, Irish singer-songwriter Aaron Rowe, and traditional Irish folk band Beoga simultaneously severed ties with the tour. Lukas Graham stressed in a public statement that musicians must retain the freedom to address civilian casualties and child welfare without financial intimidation dictates.
Sheeran released a statement clarifying that the decision to remove Macklemore rested entirely with venue operators and tour promoters, rather than himself. The English singer-songwriter explained that whilst he personally chooses to keep his stage politically neutral out of consideration for his diverse audience, he respects Macklemore’s conviction. Sheeran noted that his priority remained protecting the livelihoods of his extensive road crew and fulfilling commitments to ticket holders. Macklemore, however, publicly challenged the notion of neutrality in human rights crises, leaving the high-profile tour stripped of its supporting acts.
