A three-year-old boy died after drowning in a pond in Kushtia’s Mirpur upazila on Friday, prompting tension at the local health complex, where parts of the facility were reportedly vandalised and two doctors were injured.
The incident occurred at around 10am on Friday (18 September) at the 50-bed Mirpur Upazila Health Complex in Naodapara.
The deceased was identified as Rafi Hossain, the son of Sabbir Hossain from Naodapara village in Phulbaria Union. According to information available, the child drowned in a pond in the area. He was rescued and taken to the health complex in a critical condition.
Doctors on duty examined Rafi after he was brought to the hospital and declared him dead.
News of the child’s death led to an outburst among his relatives and some local residents. A group reportedly vandalised several parts of the health complex, including the room of the medical officer.
Two doctors were injured in the incident. They were identified as medical officer Dr Abdus Samad and resident medical officer Dr Jannatul Riya.
Police from Mirpur Police Station arrived at the health complex after being informed of the incident and brought the situation under control.
Rafi’s family has alleged that medical negligence contributed to his death. The allegation has not, however, been independently established. No details of an official investigation into the medical treatment provided to the child were immediately available.
The family members have also denied allegations that they behaved badly with the doctors or were responsible for the reported vandalism.
Dr Jannatul Riya said medical staff understood the distress of relatives who had lost a loved one and viewed their grief with sympathy. She added that attacks and vandalism at an emergency healthcare facility could seriously disrupt medical services.
An incident of this nature can affect not only the staff directly involved but also other patients seeking urgent treatment. Disruption inside a health facility may create additional difficulties for doctors and other healthcare workers who are required to continue providing care during an already tense situation.
The child’s death and the subsequent confrontation have therefore raised two separate issues: the family’s allegation concerning the treatment provided to Rafi and the reported damage to hospital property. Establishing whether there was any medical negligence would require an appropriate review of the treatment and circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
Meanwhile, police have begun efforts to identify those involved in the vandalism.
Mirpur Police Station officer-in-charge Mohammad Shahidul Islam said they were working to identify and arrest those responsible for the incident at the hospital.
The authorities are now expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the child’s death and assess the events that followed at the health complex. Any finding regarding medical negligence would need to be based on evidence and an appropriate investigation, while those responsible for damaging hospital property could face legal action.
