Brentford produced a commanding 3-0 victory over Chelsea on Friday, exposing serious weaknesses in their opponents’ defence and extending their unbeaten start to the season. The result leaves Chelsea with plenty to address during the three-week international break, with manager Xabi Alonso facing growing questions over his side’s recent defensive performances.
Chelsea had made an impressive start under the former Real Madrid manager, scoring 19 goals across their opening four Premier League matches. Their attacking football quickly made them one of the most eye-catching sides in the competition. That momentum, however, has faded in recent weeks. Chelsea have taken only one point from their last three league matches.
Brentford moved above their London neighbours into third place after goals from Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho. The victory also maintained their unbeaten record and underlined their ability to punish defensive lapses against one of the league’s more ambitious attacking sides.
Chelsea’s attacking rhythm has suffered since João Pedro picked up a knee injury. Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers, two players expected to provide creativity and penetration, were also kept relatively quiet by a disciplined Brentford defence.
After Chelsea’s 2-2 draw against Hull last weekend, Alonso said he wanted to see more ‘boring’ matches from his team as he sought greater control. In an attempt to achieve that balance, the Spanish coach made four changes to his starting line-up against Brentford.
Jordan Henderson was handed his first start for Chelsea, and the midfielder faced his former club on an occasion that added an extra layer of interest to the fixture.
The first half offered some evidence that Alonso’s approach had brought greater control. Neither goalkeeper was seriously tested and the two sides went into the interval without a goal. The pattern changed sharply after the restart, however, as Brentford became more aggressive and began to exploit weaknesses in Chelsea’s defensive structure.
Brentford opened the scoring from a set-piece situation. Mikkel Damsgaard delivered a corner into the area, where Yannick Schuster rose above the Chelsea defence to head the ball on. It fell to Jaidon Anthony in space, and he made no mistake from close range.
Chelsea struggled to produce a response. As they pushed forward in search of an equaliser, gaps began to appear behind their defensive line, allowing Brentford to threaten on the counter-attack.
Kevin Schade came close to adding a second after finding himself one-on-one with Emi Martinez. The Argentine goalkeeper reacted quickly to deny him, but the danger was not over. Igor Thiago collected the rebound and fired home to end his wait for a league goal this season.
The goal carried particular significance for the Brazilian forward. Thiago scored 25 goals last season, a return that helped earn him a surprise call-up to Carlo Ancelotti’s World Cup squad. His start to the current campaign had been quieter, but he marked his first Premier League goal of the season with an exuberant celebration, removing his shirt.
For Chelsea, the defensive problems have become a worrying pattern. In each of the five league matches played under Alonso, the side have conceded at least two goals. The inability to protect their goal after taking risks in attack has repeatedly left them vulnerable, and Brentford exposed that weakness ruthlessly.
The visitors completed the scoring in stoppage time. Schade’s low cross took a deflection and fell into Fabio Carvalho’s path. Carvalho responded with a powerful finish over Martinez to make it 3-0 and complete a convincing victory.
The result echoed Brentford’s performance on the opening weekend of the season, when they also defeated Tottenham 3-0. They now sit third in the Premier League table, behind reigning champions Arsenal and Manchester City.
Chelsea, meanwhile, enter the international break with clear areas to address. Their early-season attacking form remains a reminder of what the team can produce, but recent results have highlighted concerns over defensive organisation, set-piece defending and the balance between attacking ambition and protection at the back. The three-week break gives Alonso time to work on those issues before the league campaign resumes.
