A devastating chain of traffic accidents in Bogura has claimed the lives of three individuals and left six others injured, casting a pall of sorrow over a grieving family and highlighting persistent road safety hazards across regional transport corridors.

The tragedy unfolded in two sequential crashes on Monday morning within Bogura Sadar upazila. The initial collision occurred near the entrance of TMSS Medical College and Hospital in the Thengamara area. A three-wheeled CNG-operated auto-rickshaw carrying five passengers towards the medical facility was rammed by a speeding passenger bus. The severe force of the impact destroyed the small vehicle, killing two passengers on the spot. Law enforcement authorities identified the deceased as Shafiqul Islam, 45, and Arafat, 16, both residents of Rampur village under Kahaloo upazila. Three other occupants in the auto-rickshaw sustained significant injuries and were immediately rushed to the adjacent hospital for emergency treatment.

Following the initial tragedy, distraught family members collected the bodies of Shafiqul and Arafat from the hospital grounds. They boarded a hired ambulance to transport their deceased relatives home for funeral preparations and burial rites.

Cruel fate intervened a short while later along the highway near the Ranirhat area. An unidentified vehicle violently struck the ambulance as it navigated the stretch, causing a second horrific crash. The collision instantly killed Khadija Khatun, 52, a resident of Bandighi village in Sadar upazila, who was travelling inside the ambulance to support her grieving relatives. Three additional family members accompanying the bodies received injuries of varying severity in the second impact and were hurried to a nearby healthcare centre.

Speaking on the incidents, Officer-in-Charge Raich Uddin of the Kundarhat Highway Police Post confirmed that officers were deployed to both crash sites to manage traffic and assist the casualties. Sergeant Sagar Ali noted that investigators are actively gathering physical evidence, collecting statements, and examining CCTV footage along the route to identify the hit-and-run vehicles and their drivers.

Highway police confirmed that formal legal proceedings are underway, with rigorous investigations aimed at establishing accountability, apprehending the runaway drivers, and securing justice for the victims. Local residents and road safety advocates have voiced growing concern over reckless driving, high speeds near hospital zones, and lax traffic rule enforcement along major arteries in northern Bangladesh.
