Australia batter Sam Konstas has revisited the highly publicised confrontation with Virat Kohli during his Test debut against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, saying the incident is now firmly in the past.
Konstas made his international Test debut for Australia in the Boxing Day Test against India in Melbourne. At just 19, he walked into one of the biggest contests in world cricket and immediately attracted attention with an aggressive approach against India’s formidable bowling attack.
The match also produced a tense exchange between Konstas and Kohli, one of India’s most experienced and prominent batters. The incident quickly became one of the defining moments of the Test, with footage of the confrontation receiving widespread attention.
Konstas, who is currently in India with Australia A, has now spoken about the episode in an interview with The Times of India. His recollection suggests that there is no lingering hostility between the two players.
According to Konstas, Kohli made contact with him with his shoulder during the incident. The brief confrontation then developed into an exchange of words before players and officials intervened.
Looking back, however, Konstas said both he and Kohli had moved on from what happened. He also revealed that Kohli spoke to him after the match and wished him well for the future.
For the young Australian, the incident was ultimately part of the intensity of competitive cricket rather than something that needed to continue beyond the boundary.
The confrontation with Kohli was not the only memorable moment of Konstas’s debut. He also found himself involved in a lively exchange with India’s leading fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah.
Konstas took an unusually aggressive approach against Bumrah, attacking the experienced seamer rather than allowing him to dictate the contest. One of the standout moments came when the Australian produced an audacious reverse-scoop-style shot to hit Bumrah for six.
The shot became one of the most talked-about passages of his debut. It also highlighted the confidence Konstas displayed despite facing one of the most respected fast bowlers in international cricket.
Konstas later admitted that he could no longer remember every detail of the exchange with Bumrah. He nevertheless recalled the whole episode with a smile, saying it was amusing to think that so many dramatic moments had unfolded during his very first Test.
For a teenager making his international debut, the circumstances were remarkable. He was facing a world-class Indian bowling attack, competing in a high-profile Test between two traditional rivals and sharing the field with established figures such as Kohli and Bumrah.
His approach against Bumrah also illustrated the fearless style that had brought him into Australia’s Test side. Rather than being overawed by the reputation of his opponent, Konstas looked for opportunities to score and put pressure back on the bowler.
He acknowledged the quality of Bumrah and suggested that conceding runs to a young debutant would naturally have been frustrating for a bowler of his standing. Yet the exchange also reflected the competitive nature of the contest.

With time having passed, though, Konstas appears to view the episode differently. Rather than dwelling on the confrontation, he has described it as something that happened in the heat of a Test match and was subsequently left behind.
Kohli’s post-match gesture also appears to have influenced his perspective. Despite the tension on the field, the Indian star’s decision to wish the youngster well offered a more cordial ending to an otherwise heated episode.
For Konstas, the Melbourne Test was therefore about far more than one confrontation. It was his first taste of the demands of Test cricket, his first opportunity to challenge an elite bowling attack and an early lesson in the intensity that accompanies an Australia-India series.
The moments involving Kohli and Bumrah may have dominated the headlines, but they also formed part of a memorable first chapter in the young Australian’s international career.
