A devastating road accident on the outskirts of Gazipur Metropolis has taken the lives of a 30-year-old mother and her young daughter. The incident occurred late on Sunday night along the heavily trafficked Dhaka Bypass Road, near the Meghdubi Kali Factory area under the jurisdiction of Pubail Police Station.

The deceased have been identified as Rejuka Begum, 30, and her three-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Riya Moni. Rejuka was the daughter of Sekandar Ali from Baghata village in Sherpur district’s Sreebardi upazila and the wife of Monir Hossain. She lived with her family in rented accommodation owned by Mostafa Kamal in the Salna Bazar area of Gazipur Metropolis.

The tragedy unfolded as Rejuka was returning home after visiting a friend’s residence in the Mirer Bazar area of Pubail. Whilst navigating the Dhaka Bypass Road in the late hours of the night, both mother and child were struck by an unidentified speeding vehicle that fled the scene immediately after impact. The force of the collision threw them to the roadside, leaving them critically injured.

Local passersby who witnessed the aftermath contacted the national emergency service line, 999. Following the alert, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Anwar Hossain of Pubail Police Station led a team to the location to retrieve the victims and secure the area. Officers quickly transported both mother and child to the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur for urgent medical care.

Attending physicians at the hospital pronounced Rejuka Begum dead upon arrival due to the severity of her trauma. Medical staff admitted young Riya Moni in critical condition, initiating intensive emergency treatment. Despite prolonged efforts by the medical team, the child succumbed to her injuries at approximately 3:00 am. The double fatality has left the victims’ family overwhelmed with grief and sparked sorrow among local residents.

Atikur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Pubail Police Station, confirmed that legal proceedings are currently under way. Police have launched an active investigation to locate the hit-and-run vehicle and apprehend its driver. Officers are reviewing local traffic movements, gathering eye-witness statements, and collecting evidence around the crash site to establish the vehicle’s identity. The body handover and post-accident legal formalities are being completed in accordance with standard procedure.
