Two men sustained gunshot wounds and four were taken into custody following an midnight confrontation with law enforcement in the capital’s Adabor area. The operation brings the total number of arrests connected to a high-profile violent property extortion and land-grabbing case to ten.

The violent standoff occurred at approximately 2:30 am on Tuesday in an open space near the canal behind a local sports field near the Nabodoy Housing market. Acting on a covert intelligence tip-off regarding the location of suspects involved in an armed residential attack, a team from Adabor Police Station launched a raid around 2:00 am.

Upon arriving at the hideout, officers encountered seven to eight individuals. When police moved to secure the area and execute arrests, several suspects allegedly charged at the team brandishing sharp weapons, including meat cleavers (chapatis), samurais, and traditional curved blades (kirich). Confronted with immediate physical threat, a constable fired two rounds from a service shotgun in self-defence to repel the attack and subdue the assailants.

Two suspects, identified as 30-year-old Rajib Howlader and 24-year-old Sagar, suffered gunshot wounds to their legs. Officers immediately detained them alongside two accomplices—Shakib, 23, and Rashed, 24—while the remaining members of the group fled into the darkness. The wounded men were placed under police guard and dispatched to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for treatment. Police recovered an assortment of sharp weapons from the site following the melee.

Officer-in-Charge of Adabor Police Station, Jahidul Islam, confirmed that officers opened fire purely in self-defence after coming under direct assault. He added that formal legal action regarding the attack on the police force is currently underway.

According to police records, all four individuals arrested during the overnight raid carry extensive criminal histories. Sagar faces eight separate charges across Adabor and Mohammadpur police stations, while Rajib is a named accused in the charge sheet of the prominent Babu murder case in Mohammadpur. Shakib and Rashed are each implicated in five criminal cases.

The raid originates from a violent incident on Sunday in Adabor’s Shyamoli Housing, where a gang of 15 to 20 men armed with firearms, chapatis, and large machetes (ramdas) attempted to forcibly occupy a residential building. The group vandalised the property and demanded extortion money, escalating a long-standing ownership dispute currently pending before the courts. Prior to Tuesday’s midnight operation, police had already arrested six individuals linked to the incident. Law enforcement officials confirmed that operations remain active to track down the remaining fugitives.
