Female Garment Worker Killed in Tongi Bus Crash Sparks Protests

A 25-year-old female garment worker lost her life after being struck by a speeding bus in Tongi, Gazipur, prompting enraged factory colleagues to blockade the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for roughly half an hour late on Thursday night.
The fatal accident occurred around 10:00 pm on Thursday (8 October) in the Gazipura area along the busy Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. The victim was identified as Rahima Begum, a resident worker employed at a local ready-made garment factory in Gazipura.
According to eyewitnesses and local police, Rahima was attempting to cross the highway after finishing an overtime shift at her workplace. As she stepped onto the road, a fast-moving passenger bus belonging to United Paribahan struck her forcefully, causing instant death at the scene. The driver fled the spot immediately after the collision.
News of the fatality spread rapidly through nearby industrial units, drawing hundreds of fellow factory workers and local residents onto the thoroughfare in protest. Demonstrators staged a road blockade demanding justice for the victim and strict enforcement of traffic safety standards. The sudden disruption brought vehicular movement to a complete standstill on both sides of the corridor, resulting in extensive traffic queues stretching towards Tongi and the Chandana Crossroads. Long-distance buses, freight lorries, and commuter vehicles remained stranded as traffic ground to a halt.
Officers from the Tongi East Police Station dispatched teams to the scene to disperse the crowds and restore order. Police officials engaged in discussions with the grieving workers, reassuring them that legal action would be pursued against the transport company and the driver involved. Following these assurances, the protesters vacated the highway after approximately 30 minutes, allowing traffic flow to resume gradually.
Mohammad Maksudul Alam, Officer-in-Charge of Tongi East Police Station, confirmed the casualty and stated that officers took custody of the deceased’s body for necessary legal procedures and post-mortem examination. He added that the situation on the highway has returned to normal, whilst efforts to trace the vehicle and its driver remain underway.
