Gunfire was reported in the Pallabi Avenue-5 area of Mirpur in the capital after several people allegedly arrived on motorcycles and opened fire. No casualties have been reported so far.
Pallabi police station officer-in-charge Jalal Uddin said on Thursday night that initial information suggested several people had arrived in the area on two motorcycles while looking for someone. Residents subsequently reported hearing gunshots from the motorcycles.
Police have yet to establish the exact number of rounds fired. The officer said the information was being verified and that more details would emerge once investigators had examined the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to a source familiar with the incident, four shots were reportedly fired in succession in the Pallabi Avenue-5 area. However, police have not independently confirmed the number of rounds, leaving the precise sequence of events unclear at this stage.
CCTV footage under review
Investigators are examining CCTV footage from the area in an effort to identify the people who arrived on the motorcycles and establish what happened before and after the shooting.
The footage is expected to help investigators determine the number of motorcycles involved, the movements of those riding them and the route they took after the incident. Police are also seeking to establish who the individuals were reportedly looking for and whether the shooting was connected to that search.
Authorities have not yet disclosed a possible motive, and no one has been reported arrested in connection with the incident.
The shooting took place in a populated area of Mirpur, raising concerns among residents, although there have been no reports of anyone being injured. Police are continuing to verify accounts from local residents while examining available CCTV footage.
Jalal Uddin said the investigation was focused on identifying the individuals involved and establishing the details of the incident. Until the footage and other information are assessed, police have not confirmed whether a particular person was the intended target or why the shots were fired.
