Jamaat Leader Removed from Post Over Extramarital Relationship

Mohammad Ismail, president of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Chandgaon thana unit in Chattogram city, has been removed from his post following an internal investigation into allegations that he was involved in an extramarital relationship with the divorced wife of an expatriate.

Professor Jasim Uddin has been appointed to replace him as president of the Chandgaon thana unit. The decision was taken on Wednesday after a party investigation committee submitted its report on the allegations against Ismail.

A video showing Nazrul Islam, amir of the Chattogram city branch of Jamaat-e-Islami, announcing Ismail’s removal has surfaced. The party has not publicly disclosed the full details of the investigation or the specific findings on which the decision was based.

Lutfor Rahman, organisational secretary of the city Jamaat, confirmed the leadership change. He said he had learnt that Ismail had been removed and Jasim Uddin had been given the new responsibility, but declined to provide further details.

Investigation followed allegations

According to information available about the matter, a woman from Kalaujān in Lohagara secured a job as a doctor’s assistant at IMCH in 2023 on Ismail’s recommendation. She was reportedly promoted within a relatively short period.

The woman’s former husband’s family later alleged that she had become involved in an extramarital relationship with Ismail. They claimed evidence of the alleged relationship was found and that the woman’s husband divorced her on 18 December 2024.

Following the allegations, Jamaat authorities decided to investigate the matter internally. A committee was formed under the leadership of Akhter Khairul Bashar, a member of the Chattogram city branch’s working council, to examine the allegations against Ismail.

The committee conducted its investigation and submitted its report on Monday. Two days later, the party decided to remove Ismail from his organisational position and appoint Jasim Uddin in his place.

The action represents an internal organisational response to allegations involving a senior local leader. However, details of the investigation report have not been made public, and the party has not provided a detailed account of the evidence considered by the committee.

New leader takes charge

Jasim Uddin confirmed that he had been asked to take responsibility for the Chandgaon thana unit on Wednesday. However, he said he did not know the detailed reasons behind the decision to replace Ismail with him.

“I was asked on Wednesday to take responsibility for Chandgaon thana,” Jasim said. “I do not know the detailed reasons why I was given the responsibility in place of Mohammad Ismail.”

Attempts were made to contact Ismail for his response to the allegations and his removal from office, but he did not answer the phone.

As a result, his direct response to the investigation, the allegations and the party’s decision remains unavailable. The party has also not released the investigation report publicly, leaving the precise findings behind the disciplinary decision undisclosed.

Jasim’s appointment means that the Chandgaon thana unit will now operate under new leadership following the internal inquiry. The change comes after the party moved to address allegations concerning the conduct of its former local president.
