Khulna Police Inspector Seriously Injured in Late-Night Robbery

A police inspector was seriously injured after three suspected muggers intercepted his rickshaw, stole his cash and mobile phone, and attacked him with a machete in Khulna city early on Friday.

The incident occurred at around 2.30 am on 9 October in front of Collegiate School on a main road under the jurisdiction of Khulna Sadar Police Station.

The injured officer, Shah Alam, 43, is an unarmed police inspector posted at the A-Circle office of Khulna district police. He is the son of Moshiyar Rahman.

According to police, Shah Alam was travelling by rickshaw towards the Police Club after completing a special operation in the Rupsha Police Station area of Khulna district. During the journey, three suspected muggers stopped his rickshaw and robbed him of his cash and mobile phone.

The attackers then struck him on both wrists with a sharp machete before fleeing the scene. The severity of the injuries left the police officer in need of urgent medical attention.

After receiving information about the incident, Khulna Sadar Police Station’s officer-in-charge, Lokman Hossain, and a mobile team from Sonadanga Police Station helped rescue the injured inspector.

Shah Alam was initially taken to a private hospital in Khulna. He was later transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital for further treatment.

He was admitted in a serious condition to wards 11 and 12 of the hospital’s surgery department at 4.15 am on Friday. After examining the injuries to both wrists, the attending doctors recommended that he be transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

He was subsequently taken towards Dhaka in a government ambulance operated by the police.

Lokman Hossain, officer-in-charge of Khulna Sadar Police Station, confirmed the incident. However, the initial report did not provide details about the identities of the suspected attackers or whether any arrests had been made.

The incident highlights the risks associated with violent street crime, particularly during the early hours when fewer people may be present on the roads. Attacks involving sharp weapons can cause serious injuries and require immediate medical intervention.

The robbery also raises concerns about the safety of people travelling through the city at night. For law enforcement agencies, identifying the suspects, establishing the circumstances of the attack and recovering the stolen belongings will be important steps in addressing the case.

No further details were immediately available regarding the investigation or Shah Alam’s condition following his transfer to Dhaka. His treatment and the police response to the attack remain the key developments in the case.
