LPG Shops Nationwide to Close for Two Days Over Harassment Claims

LPG retailers across Bangladesh will suspend sales for two consecutive days in protest against alleged harassment of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) traders, raising concerns about potential disruption to household cooking fuel supplies.

The announcement was made on Monday, 12 October, by Selim Khan, president of the LPG Gas Traders Cooperative Association Ltd, at a press conference held at the National Press Club in Dhaka.

According to the decision announced at the event, all LPG shops across the country will remain closed on Thursday and Friday, 15 and 16 October. The planned shutdown is intended to draw attention to the grievances of LPG traders, who allege that they are facing harassment in the course of their business activities.

The announcement comes at a time when consumers are already expressing concern over the availability and affordability of LPG cylinders. The fuel is widely used in households, restaurants and other businesses, particularly in areas where piped natural gas is unavailable or inaccessible.

The proposed two-day closure could affect the distribution and retail sale of LPG cylinders, depending on existing stocks and the extent to which traders participate in the action. Households and commercial establishments that rely on bottled gas may face difficulties obtaining supplies during the shutdown.

Price increases add to consumer concerns

The planned protest follows the latest increase in LPG prices, which took effect on 4 October. The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), the authority responsible for regulating energy prices, raised the price of a 12-kilogram LPG cylinder by Tk 252, setting the revised price at Tk 1,837.

The increase has added to concerns among consumers, many of whom depend on LPG for everyday cooking. A rise in cylinder prices can place additional pressure on household budgets, particularly for lower- and middle-income families that have limited alternatives.

However, the official price adjustment has not resolved concerns about the retail market. Allegations have emerged that LPG cylinders are not available at the government-fixed price in some locations. Consumers may therefore face a gap between the officially announced rate and the amount demanded by retailers.

Such discrepancies can create uncertainty for both buyers and sellers. While consumers seek cylinders at regulated prices, traders must also contend with supply costs, distribution arrangements and the conditions under which they operate. The allegations of harassment cited by the traders’ association have now brought these concerns into sharper focus.

Regulatory oversight and market stability

The LPG market plays a significant role in Bangladesh’s domestic energy supply. Bottled gas is particularly important for households outside the piped natural gas network, making reliable distribution and transparent pricing essential.

BERC’s announced price is intended to provide a regulated benchmark for the retail market. Effective implementation, however, depends on adequate supplies, compliance by market participants and appropriate monitoring by the relevant authorities.

The traders’ planned shutdown highlights the need to address disputes between businesses and the authorities while ensuring that consumers are not disproportionately affected. A prolonged disruption to retail sales could create additional pressure on households and businesses that depend on regular LPG supplies.

As of the announcement on Monday, the association’s decision was to suspend sales nationwide on 15 and 16 October. The immediate focus will be on whether the planned closure proceeds as announced and whether the grievances raised by traders receive a response from the relevant authorities.

For consumers, the central concern remains access to LPG at the officially determined price. Any resolution will need to balance traders’ complaints with the need to maintain uninterrupted supplies and protect buyers from unjustified price differences.
