Four Arrested After Disabled Man Lynched Over False Theft Suspicions

Police in Noakhali Sadar Upazila have arrested four individuals in connection with the fatal beating of a physically and mentally disabled man who was tied to a tree, assaulted by a mob under the guise of theft suspicions, and subsequently abandoned miles away.

The tragic details were disclosed during a press conference at Sudharam Model Police Station on Wednesday afternoon, led by Additional Superintendent of Police Abu Taher Mohammad Arif Hossain.

The victim, 35-year-old Kabir Hossain, lived with his mother, Kamala Begum, in Gain Bari within Noannai Union. According to law enforcement accounts, the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon near Islamganj Market. Kabir was walking home when a crowd led by primary suspect Alauddin Munshi confronted him over unverified accusations of theft.

Bound to a nearby tree with nylon ropes, Kabir was subjected to a sustained physical assault by 25 to 30 men using wooden sticks, fists, and kicks. Authorities noted that no evidence substantiating the theft allegations was presented during the initial briefing.

Rather than procuring medical assistance as Kabir succumbed to his injuries, the perpetrators loaded his critical body into a battery-operated auto-rickshaw. He was driven roughly five kilometres away to Devipur village in the neighbouring Neyazpur Union, where he was dumped near the eastern outskirts of the district town.

Prompted by local reports, Sudharam Police retrieved Kabir and rushed him to Noakhali General Hospital, where attending medical personnel declared him dead on arrival. Officers subsequently prepared an inquest report before dispatching the body for an autopsy to determine the precise cause and nature of the fatal injuries.

The victim’s grieving mother, Kamala Begum, filed a formal murder case at Sudharam Police Station naming eight primary suspects alongside 25 to 30 unidentified co-conspirators. She described her son as a vulnerable individual who spent his days wandering locally before returning home every evening. Upon learning of his capture, she searched frantically throughout the afternoon, only to be informed that evening that his body lay in the hospital morgue.

Following the registration of the case, a joint night-time operation conducted by Sudharam Police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) led to the arrest of four key suspects:

  • Md Alauddin Munshi (28) — Identified as the main ringleader who led the mob.

  • Md Farooq Uddin Shuvo (24)

  • Md Hossain (34)

  • Md Tarek (23)

Investigating officers also recovered the auto-rickshaw used to transport the victim. Operations remain ongoing to apprehend the remaining named suspects and establish the full sequence of events.

Extrajudicial violence and mob lynchings based on unverified rumours pose persistent security challenges in rural and sub-urban areas. Legal experts emphasise that citizens have no right to detain or physically punish individuals suspected of crimes, as such matters must be referred directly to law enforcement. Physical violence against individuals, particularly those living with cognitive or physical disabilities, constitutes a grave offense under Bangladeshi criminal law.
