A light-hearted banter between two close acquaintances turned deadly in Chuadanga’s Alamdanga upazila on Wednesday evening, leaving a 23-year-old aspiring migrant worker dead and prompting the swift arrest of his companion.
The deceased, identified as Imdadul Haq, son of Rezaul Karim from Naoda Bondbil village, succumbed to severe head injuries while being transported to hospital following a violent confrontation. Police officers moved quickly after the assault, detaining 25-year-old Nice Khondokar, a fellow villager and son of the late Majnu Khondokar.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 pm on 14 October near a tea stall at the new bus stand in Gobindapur village under Alamdanga municipality. According to local residents and witnesses, the two young men shared a long-standing friendship and were accustomed to joking with each other. However, an exchange of playful remarks at the tea stall escalated unexpectedly into a heated argument.
Seeking to settle the dispute, Imdadul walked towards Nice’s residence to inform his mother about her son’s conduct. Enraged by the move, Nice grabbed a wooden stick and pursued him. As Imdadul attempted to run away, he lost his footing and fell. Taking advantage of the situation, Nice struck him on the head with the stick, inflicting critical wounds.
Bystanders rushed the injured youth to a nearby clinic for immediate emergency care. Owing to the severity of the trauma, attending personnel advised an urgent transfer to Kushtia Medical College Hospital for specialised treatment. Imdadul died on the way.
The tragic incident has cast a dark shadow over Naoda Bondbil village, where neighbors described Imdadul as a hopeful young man planning his future. Uzzal Hossain, a local resident, shared that Imdadul was making arrangements to travel abroad for work. Having travelled to Dhaka to secure his departure, he had returned home only on Tuesday night after his scheduled flight encountered an unexpected delay.
Confirming the police response, Rakibul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Alamdanga Police Station, stated that law enforcement officers conducted a raid immediately following the assault to apprehend the suspect. The deceased’s body has been dispatched to the Chuadanga Sadar Hospital morgue for a formal post-mortem examination.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that the victim’s family is preparing to file a murder case. The forensic findings, alongside police interviews with witnesses at the scene, will form the backbone of the upcoming legal proceedings as investigators determine the full sequence of events.
