10-Year-Old Girl Raped in Kasba

A 10-year-old girl has allegedly been raped in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria, leaving her hospitalised for treatment. Her mother has filed a case with Kasba Police Station, and police are making efforts to arrest the accused, identified as furniture shop owner Yasin Mia.

According to the case details and allegations made by the girl’s family, the child is a Year Five pupil at a local government primary school.

The incident reportedly took place on Friday morning, when the girl went to a market in her village to buy cooking oil. While returning home, she was allegedly taken into a furniture shop beside the road, where Yasin Mia is accused of sexually assaulting her.

The family alleged that, following the incident, the accused threatened to kill the child if she disclosed what had happened. He allegedly gave her a 20-taka banknote and sent her home.

When the girl returned, her family became concerned after she began crying. They reportedly found her bleeding and took her to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital that same day. She remains under medical care.

Kasba Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ali Mohammad Rashed confirmed that a case had been filed in connection with the incident. He said the girl’s mother lodged the complaint on Sunday morning and that police were making concerted efforts to arrest Yasin Mia.

The case has also raised concerns over an alleged attempt to settle the matter informally at the local level. Zainal Abedin, a social worker from a neighbouring village, said some local residents had tried to resolve the incident through a traditional village arbitration process, which he alleged could have resulted in the matter being concealed rather than pursued through the legal system.

According to Abedin, several young residents insisted that the allegations should be addressed through the formal judicial process and that the accused should face justice in accordance with the law. Their objections led to the proposed arbitration being abandoned.

The allegations have brought renewed attention to the importance of protecting children from sexual violence and ensuring that complaints are handled through appropriate legal channels. In cases involving children, prompt medical care, sensitive handling of evidence and protection of the victim’s identity are essential to safeguarding the child’s welfare and supporting the investigation.

The allegations against Yasin Mia have yet to be established in court. Police have said they are working to arrest him, while the investigation is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident. The child’s recovery and the proper handling of the case remain central concerns as the legal process proceeds.
