Student Leader Expelled After Alleged Hospital Assault in Lakshmipur

A Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader has been removed from the organisation after allegedly assaulting a Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal leader inside the emergency department of Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital.

Shahidul Islam Shahed was relieved of his party responsibilities, including his primary membership, following the incident involving Juwel Hossain Nirab. The decision was confirmed in a press release issued on Monday afternoon, 26 October, and signed by Lokman Hossain Joy, convener of Dalal Bazar Degree College Chhatra Dal, and its member secretary, Ikram Mahmud Fahad.

Shahed previously served as convener of the college’s Chhatra Dal unit. He was also active as a candidate for the post of general secretary of the organisation’s unit in Ward 3 of Lakshmipur Municipality.

The alleged assault took place on Sunday night, 25 October, after a dispute over the buying and selling of a mobile phone reportedly led to a physical altercation between the two men earlier in the day.

According to hospital officials and people familiar with the incident, Juwel went to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital for treatment after the initial confrontation. Shahed allegedly arrived at the hospital with several associates and continued the assault.

At one stage, Juwel reportedly entered a room in the hospital’s emergency department in an attempt to escape the attack. Shahed allegedly followed him inside and struck him with a chair, while also punching and kicking him repeatedly. The assault left Juwel seriously injured, according to accounts of the incident.

A video purportedly showing the attack subsequently circulated on Facebook, drawing attention to the incident. The footage appears to show a man being struck with a chair and assaulted with punches and kicks inside the emergency department. Shahed and his associates have been accused of carrying out the attack, although the full circumstances have not been independently verified.

Juwel is the senior vice-president of the Swechchhasebak Dal unit in Ward 1 of Lakshmipur Municipality. He was reportedly taken to Dhaka for advanced medical treatment following the incident. No further details about his current medical condition were immediately available.

The incident has raised concerns about violence within hospital premises, where patients and injured people seek urgent medical attention. Emergency departments are intended to provide immediate care, and violent confrontations in such spaces can place patients, their relatives and healthcare workers at risk while potentially disrupting medical services.

The disciplinary action against Shahed was announced after the incident attracted public attention. However, the party’s decision to remove him from its ranks is separate from any potential legal proceedings concerning the alleged assault.

Efforts to contact Shahed for his response to the allegations were unsuccessful. His account of the incident was therefore unavailable.

District Chhatra Dal leader Hasibur Rahman Abhi confirmed the disciplinary action, saying Shahed had been relieved of his primary membership and all organisational activities. He added that Shahed no longer had any affiliation with Chhatra Dal.

The reported dispute over a mobile phone and the subsequent violence inside the hospital remain central to the case. Further clarification from the people involved and any relevant authorities would be necessary to establish the full sequence of events and determine whether additional action will follow.
