A young man in Daulatpur Upazila, Kushtia, caused widespread panic in his neighbourhood on Thursday evening, 20 November, after setting off petrol bombs and a cocktail explosion in his own home. The incident reportedly stemmed from a dispute over a new motorcycle.
The accused, Imon Ali, 22, son of Hashem Ali, 52, from Sonaikundi Uttarpara in Hogolbaria Union, was quickly apprehended by police following the explosion. Local sources stated that Hashem Ali works at Nasir Glass Factory in Tangail. For the past two months, Imon had been persistently demanding a Suzuki Gixxer motorcycle, creating unrest within the family.
Neighbours reported that Imon had previously assaulted his mother and driven her out of the house about a month ago. On Thursday, when his parents returned, he detonated two petrol bombs and a cocktail explosion in the courtyard, allegedly to increase pressure on his family to fulfil his demands.
Residents expressed shock at the violent episode. “He had been disobedient for a long time. Since his HSC studies, he became involved in drug use and various criminal activities in the area,” said a local resident, describing the ongoing tension within the family.
Daulatpur Police acted swiftly. Officer-in-Charge Solaiman Sheikh Kalbela confirmed that Imon was arrested immediately after the explosion and legal action has been initiated. “The law and order situation in the area is now under control,” he stated.
