A seven-month pregnant woman, Kakli Begum (22), was brutally killed by her husband, Jahirul Islam, in Haimchar upazila of Chandpur. The incident took place on Sunday afternoon (23 November) in the Rarhi Kandi area under Ward No. 9 of Nilkamal Union. Police arrested the accused husband, Jahirul Islam (30), shortly after the incident.
According to police and local sources, the couple had been experiencing family disputes for some time. Amid these tensions, Jahirul allegedly took his pregnant wife to a paddy field, where he tied her hands and feet and killed her. Upon receiving information from locals, Sub-Inspector Kabir of the Ishanbala Baherchar Police Outpost rushed to the scene, recovered the body and detained the accused.
After his arrest, Jahirul confessed to the crime in a video statement. He claimed that he suspected the unborn child was not his and alleged that his wife had an illicit relationship. Police said these claims are part of the investigation and have not yet been verified.
Nilkamal Union Parishad Chairman Monir Shikder informed the police after learning about the incident. Later, officers from Haimchar Police Station arrived at the scene, secured the area and collected evidence.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Haimchar Police Station, Mohammad Shah Alam, said police responded immediately after receiving the information and arrested the accused husband. Senior officials of Chandpur district police also visited the scene.
Chandpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Muhammad Abdur Rakib said the victim’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Preliminary investigation suggests the husband’s involvement in the murder. Further legal action will be taken after completion of the investigation. The incident has caused widespread shock and outrage in the local community.
