New Tk500 Banknote Highlights Shaheed Minar and Supreme Court with Modern Design

Bangladesh Bank is set to introduce a new Tk500 banknote on Thursday, 4 December, marking a significant update to the nation’s currency series. The note will initially be available at the central Motijheel office in Dhaka, with a gradual rollout to branches nationwide in the following days.

The front of the banknote prominently features the Central Shaheed Minar, an iconic monument symbolising the country’s historic language movement and broader liberation struggle. On the reverse, the note depicts the Bangladesh Supreme Court, reflecting the nation’s commitment to justice and the rule of law. Measuring 152 millimetres in length and 65 millimetres in width, the note balances traditional symbolism with modern design elements.

At the centre of the note, a stylised water lily motif serves as the principal design element, emblematic of Bangladesh’s national identity. The note incorporates a Royal Bengal Tiger watermark along with an electrotype “500” to enhance security against counterfeiting. Despite its dominant green hue, the note presents a contemporary aesthetic while integrating reinforced anti-fraud measures.

In total, the new Tk500 note incorporates ten advanced security elements, designed to ensure both authenticity and durability. Bangladesh Bank has emphasised that the introduction of the new note will not affect existing currency, confirming that all current notes and coins will continue to remain valid and circulate alongside the new Tk500.

The issuance of the updated note represents part of Bangladesh Bank’s ongoing efforts to modernise the nation’s currency while preserving its historical and cultural motifs. Observers note that these measures are aimed at improving public confidence in cash transactions and reducing incidences of counterfeiting.
