Messi Inspires Miami as Club Reaches Third Straight MLS Play-offs

Inter Miami have secured their place in the Major League Soccer (MLS) play-offs for the third consecutive season after beating New York City FC 2-0 at home. Although Lionel Messi did not score, the Argentine captain played a key role in the victory by setting up Rodrigo De Paul’s goal.

Miami took the lead in the 20th minute on Thursday morning through Germán Berterame. The hosts continued to press for another goal and doubled their advantage in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time, when De Paul found the net following an excellent assist from Messi.

The second goal gave Miami a comfortable advantage heading into the break and put them in a strong position to secure the three points.

New York City FC attempted to fight their way back into the contest after the interval, creating several attacking opportunities. However, Miami’s defence and goalkeeper Dayne St Clair stood firm under pressure.

St Clair proved particularly influential in the closing stages, making four crucial saves, including stopping a penalty. Despite registering 14 shots during the match, New York City FC failed to find the net as Miami maintained their two-goal lead until the final whistle.

Messi continues to shine

Although he was unable to add to his goal tally against New York City FC, Messi remains one of the standout performers in the league this season.

The Argentine forward has scored 23 goals and provided 14 assists in the MLS so far. His contribution in front of goal, combined with his ability to create chances for teammates, has been central to Miami’s attacking strength.

Messi is also among the leading contenders for a third consecutive MLS Most Valuable Player award. His position in the Golden Boot race remains strong, further underlining his influence on the team’s performances.

His assist for De Paul’s goal was another reminder of his ability to shape matches without necessarily scoring himself. By creating opportunities and linking up with teammates, the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star continues to play a decisive role in Miami’s campaign.

Miami target another title

Inter Miami won the MLS Cup last season and will now look to defend their title as they prepare for the play-offs. Reaching the knockout stage for a third successive year highlights the club’s continued presence among the league’s competitive sides.

However, maintaining their regular-season form will be crucial as the team enters a stage where every match carries greater significance. Miami will need contributions from across the squad, with their attacking players, defensive unit and goalkeeper all expected to play important roles.

The MLS play-offs are scheduled to begin on 18 November. With Messi leading the attack, De Paul contributing in midfield and St Clair providing security in goal, Miami will hope to carry their momentum into the knockout rounds and mount another serious challenge for the championship.
