Ataur Rahman: Iconic Mohammedan Supporter Remembered Forever

Dhaka’s football stadiums were once alive with deafening cheers, and at the very heart of that fervour stood Ataur Rahman, affectionately known as ‘Ata Bhai’. A devoted supporter of Mohammedan Sporting Club, his booming voice and the sight of the club’s black-and-white flag were synonymous with matchday excitement at both the National Stadium and Mirpur. Last night, that familiar presence fell silent. Ataur Rahman passed away peacefully at his home in Tejgaon, Dhaka, at the age of 80, following age-related illnesses.

His love for Mohammedan was evident from a very young age. Ataur first entered the stands of Dhaka Stadium in 1962 as a teenager, and from that moment, his heart beat only for the club. In an era long before social media amplified fandom, his dedication was absolute and unshakeable. From the 1960s through to 2017, he rarely missed a Mohammedan match in Dhaka. Even as age and health issues took a toll on his body, his spirit remained unbroken. He often attended games despite physical difficulties, feeding on the dust of the pitch and the roar of goals as though it were his lifeblood.

The fierce rivalry with Abahani was a defining feature of Ataur’s life. Even off the pitch, he seemed like a vigilant guardian of black-and-white colours, embodying the spirit of the club in every moment. His devotion transcended a single team; football itself was his religion, beyond wins or losses.

Mohammedan Sporting Club’s former Director-in-Charge, Lokman Hossain Bhuiya, paid tribute at Ataur’s funeral at the Tejgaon Jame Mosque this afternoon, alongside several club officials. They draped the club’s flag over his coffin in a symbolic farewell.

Lokman Bhuiya recalled, “Ata Bhai always carried a small note in his pocket. It read, ‘I am a supporter of Mohammedan’. He called it his ‘profession’. His only desire was a club flag and jersey. Such pure-hearted supporters are rare in this world.”
