Those who do not support the cause need not attend the Quran recital

Sirajganj-6 (Shahjadpur) constituency Jamaat-e-Islami nominee and Upazila Jamaat Ameer Md. Mizanur Rahman has stirred controversy after stating that those who do not support his party’s “Daṛipal” stance have no need to attend Quran recitation gatherings.

The remarks were made during an Islamic assembly held at local mosques in Kaempur Union, including Swaruppur and Kashinathpur Abdul Majid Hafizia and Dakhil Madrasa, organised to raise funds and support for mosque development projects.

A video of Mizanur Rahman’s speech, recorded on Saturday, 10 January, quickly went viral on social media. In it, he is heard saying:

“Those who will not stand with Daṛipal do not need to listen to the Quranic gathering. I urge everyone who has not raised their hands to support Daṛipal today. The Quran and Allah’s law must be upheld, and everyone should stand on the side of Daṛipal.”

The video has sparked widespread discussion and criticism online, with thousands of comments both in favour and against his remarks.

Responding to the backlash, Mizanur Rahman clarified:

“I delivered this speech at the assembly about two months ago. However, the way the video has been presented is not exactly how I spoke. My intention was to encourage everyone to follow the path of the Quran.”

Political opponents have also reacted. Sirajganj District BNP General Secretary Saidur Rahman Bacchu stated:

“Jamaat-e-Islami has a history of using religion for political gain. The party’s very name includes Islam, and they exploit this fact. While devout religious scholars often avoid Jamaat because they prefer a more purely theological path, the party appeals to the majority Muslim population. Islamic gatherings are meant for spiritual discussion, not political campaigning, and using them for such purposes is inappropriate.”

This incident follows a series of recent controversies involving Jamaat candidates misusing religious sentiment during election campaigns.

Political analysts warn that exploiting religious sentiment during elections risks polarising voters and undermining the integrity of spiritual institutions. Authorities continue to monitor these incidents under electoral regulations.
