Measles Symptoms Claim Seven More Lives in 24 Hours

Seven more people have died in Bangladesh after developing symptoms associated with measles in the latest 24-hour period, according to the Directorate General of Health Services. The figures were released in its regular measles surveillance report on Monday.

The deaths occurred between 8am on Sunday and 8am on Monday. With the latest fatalities, the number of people who have died after developing measles symptoms since 15 March has reached 816. Separately, 99 deaths have been confirmed as being caused by measles. Taken together, the reported death toll stands at 915.

The health authorities’ surveillance figures do not provide a breakdown of deaths by age. Epidemiologists, however, say measles can affect people of all ages, while children are generally more vulnerable to severe complications. During an outbreak, deaths among people presenting with measles symptoms are monitored closely because laboratory confirmation may not be available in every case.

The latest report also recorded 981 new cases involving people who developed symptoms consistent with measles over the past 24 hours. Since 15 March, the cumulative number of people reported with measles symptoms has risen to 143,778.

At the same time, 50 new confirmed measles cases were identified during the latest reporting period. The total number of laboratory or otherwise officially confirmed measles cases since 15 March now stands at 17,930.

Hospital admissions linked to measles symptoms have also remained high. Since the beginning of the surveillance period, 125,386 patients have been admitted to hospitals with such symptoms. Of them, 120,913 have recovered sufficiently to be discharged, according to the health authorities.

No additional confirmed measles death was recorded during the latest 24-hour period. Of the seven deaths involving people with measles symptoms, five occurred in the Dhaka division, one in the Mymensingh division and one in the Barishal division.

The continuing gap between deaths recorded among people with measles symptoms and deaths confirmed specifically as measles cases reflects the way the outbreak is being monitored. Health authorities track symptomatic deaths alongside confirmed infections to assess the wider impact of the outbreak, particularly when patients die before definitive confirmation is available.

The latest figures also indicate that the outbreak continues to place a substantial burden on hospitals. More than 143,000 people have developed reported measles symptoms since 15 March, while confirmed infections have exceeded 17,000. The high number of hospital admissions underscores the pressure placed on health facilities as medical teams manage patients with measles and related complications.

Public-health specialists generally regard vaccination as the most effective means of preventing measles outbreaks. The disease is highly contagious, and sustained transmission can place unvaccinated children and other vulnerable groups at particular risk. Continued surveillance, timely identification of suspected cases and appropriate medical care therefore remain central to controlling the spread and reducing severe outcomes.
