Police in Comilla have arrested an Assistant Public Prosecutor (AGP) in connection with the possession of firearms, magazines, and ammunition. Another young man was also detained in the operation, during which authorities recovered one foreign-made pistol, two magazines, and a total of ten rounds of ammunition.
The incident unfolded on Thursday morning in the Tomchom Bridge area of Comilla city. Police first apprehended Ariful Islam (36), a local resident of Dhormopur in Comilla Adarsha Sadar Upazila, who was found in possession of five rounds of ammunition and a knife. Following interrogation, Ariful disclosed the location of the APP, leading police to I M Masudul Haque alias Masum (51), the Assistant Public Prosecutor associated with Comilla courts.
Masudul Haque is known to be affiliated with the Jamaat-e-Islami party and is the younger brother of A K M Emdadul Haque, the Deputy Amir of Comilla Metropolitan Jamaat-e-Islami. Police conducted a search of Masudul Haque’s residence and recovered one foreign pistol, two magazines, and five rounds of ammunition from a wardrobe. Both Ariful Islam and Masudul Haque were subsequently taken into police custody.
The Comilla Sadar South Model Police Station’s EPZ outpost in-charge, Inspector Saiful Islam, confirmed the arrests, stating that preparations are underway to file charges under the Arms Act against both individuals. He detailed the operation, saying that Ariful’s mobile phone contained images of the firearms, which led investigators directly to Masudul Haque’s residence.
Efforts to reach A K M Emdadul Haque for comment were unsuccessful, with multiple calls to his mobile phone remaining unanswered.
The Comilla courts’ Public Prosecutor, Kaimul Haque, told First Alo that he had been informed of the matter by law enforcement authorities. Once the police case files are received, he will coordinate with the APP regarding the issue and communicate with the Ministry of Law, which will determine Masudul Haque’s future role as an Assistant Public Prosecutor.
