Bentley Seized in Kuala Lumpur Enforcement Sweep

Kuala Lumpur, 9 February — Malaysia’s Road Transport Department (Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan, JPJ) has seized a Bentley Continental during a targeted enforcement operation focusing on luxury vehicles along Jalan Tun Razak, following the discovery of multiple regulatory breaches attributed to the vehicle’s owner.

The incident occurred during a special inspection exercise conducted on Saturday, aimed at ensuring compliance with road safety and registration laws among high-value private vehicles. According to JPJ Director Hamidi Adam, officers stopped the Bentley for routine checks and subsequently found that the documentation associated with the car had been non-compliant for several years.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle’s road tax and insurance had not been renewed since 2018. In addition, the driver—identified as a female entrepreneur whose name has not been disclosed—was found to be operating the vehicle without a valid Competent Driving Licence (CDL). The Bentley was registered in her name, making her legally responsible for the violations.

In her statement to enforcement officers, the woman described the lapse as an “oversight”, explaining that matters relating to road tax, insurance, and documentation had previously been handled by other members of her family. She acknowledged that she had failed to personally verify the status of the vehicle’s legal requirements over an extended period.

Mr Adam emphasised that such explanations do not absolve vehicle owners of responsibility. “Regardless of a vehicle’s value or who customarily manages the paperwork, the registered owner remains fully accountable under the law,” he said. He added that allowing years-long lapses posed serious risks to road safety and undermined the integrity of traffic regulation.

Following verification, JPJ officers seized the Bentley under provisions of the Road Transport Act 1987. Further legal action will be initiated, and the vehicle will only be released upon completion of all legal procedures, including the settlement of outstanding fines, renewal of insurance and road tax, and compliance with licensing requirements.

JPJ officials confirmed that similar enforcement operations would continue nationwide, with particular attention given to luxury and high-performance vehicles that are often assumed—incorrectly—to be above routine scrutiny. The objective, they stressed, is not to target wealth, but to ensure universal compliance and safer roads for all users.

Road safety analysts have welcomed the move. Dr Farida Hossain, a transport safety specialist, noted that owners of premium vehicles sometimes rely excessively on third parties. “Delegation does not remove legal responsibility. Ultimately, the owner must ensure that all documents and licences are valid,” she said.
